RIVETING AND POWERFUL PLAY EXPLORES THE ART AND CREATIVITY OF MARK ROTHKO
A glimpse into the life and work of Rothko during the pinnacle of his creativity.

LANGLEY, WA (January 27, 2020) - Whidbey Island Center for the Arts presents John Logan’s Tony Award-winning RED , February 7 – 22, 2020.

Set in Mark Rothko’s painting studio in New York City in the 1950s, RED is an emotional and dynamic play which shows Rothko’s absorption in his work through the lens of his new assistant and aspiring painter. Director Vito Zingarelli sums the play up as, “the Illumination of a creative process brought to life onstage.”

As the assistant begins work with Rothko, they challenge each other with the big questions about art: what it takes to create it, what its role should be in the world, and what does it take to make good art

RED encourages audiences to think about the value of artistic work and inspires them to look deeply and with intention and purpose upon a thing which at first glance may seem shallow. The play also sheds light on, as Zingarelli puts it, “the role art can play in the fabric of our culture.”

The production is directed by Vito Zingarelli, and features Andrew Grenier as Mark Rothko. RED runs February 7-22, 2020 in Langley, WA.

Whidbey Island Center for the Arts' 100th theatrical production.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Russian-born Mark Rothko (Marcus Rothkowitz) was fascinated by myth and surrealism and wished his work to be spiritually expressive. Vito Zingarelli  (Director) has worked for 30+ years in North America as a Producing Director and Production Manager where he put together seasons and mounted over 150 productions of Classical, Contemporary, and Musical Theatre as well as championing new play development at the following theatres: the Guthrie Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Empty Space Theatre, Alaska Repertory Theatre, as well as North America’s largest resident theater company, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada.

Andrew Grenier  (Rothko) has had a theatre career that spans over fifty years as an educator, actor, director, and producer. Most recently, in the Winter of 2018, Andrew appeared as Roger in Chris Fisher’s Steel at the Erickson Theatre in Seattle. His most recent appearance at WICA was in February of 2015 when he directed, and played the role of Lyman Wyeth, in Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities . Previously at WICA Andrew directed the Alan Ayckbourn Tony Award-winning trilogy The Norman Conquests , Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage , and Doubt by John Patrick Shanley.
