Orlando, Fla. - August 28, 2023 - The Health Law Firm's President and Managing Partner, George F. Indest III, was quoted in a recent article concerning ethical and legal questions surrounding the attempt to take Miami-Dade Police Director into custody after an alleged suicide attempt.
Tampa Bay Times reported on the incident of a man's threatening to end his own life at a hotel in Tampa. He turned out to be the Director of Police for Miami-Dade, Freddy Ramirez. A lack of witnesses and video evidence of any suicide attempt allegedly prevented the police from detaining Mr. Ramirez and transporting him to the hospital under Florida's Baker Act. The Baker Act allows law enforcement authorities and medical personal to hold an individual involuntarily at a designated healthcare facility for up to 72 hours so that a psychiatrist can examine that person.
In the article, Mr. Indest, board certified by The Florida Bar in the legal specialty of Health Law, provides insight into the requirements of the Baker Act and confirms that the police did not act inappropriately from what information is publically known.
