WARWICK, R.I. — Today, the Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB) at the Department of Business Regulation held an event reminding consumers to check their contractor’s registration and verify they are in good standing with the state before signing a contract or paying them.
By law, anyone in Rhode Island doing residential or commercial construction work—such as building, remodeling, or repairs—valued at $500 or more, must be registered by the CRLB.
Since June 2025, the CRLB has received 457 complaints against contractors or unlicensed individuals that resulted in 50 consent agreements and $169,843 being returned to consumers.
"Protecting consumers is a top priority and we will always act against those who put consumers and honest businesses at risk," said DBR Director Elizabeth Kelleher Dwyer. "Taking a few moments to confirm a contractor’s registration status can help protect from financial loss, incomplete work, and unnecessary stress."
"When unregistered contractors operate outside of the law, they not only put consumers at risk, but they also create an unfair disadvantage for those honest professionals who are following the rules and take pride in their work," said Carol O’Donnell, Vice Chair of the Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board.
