CORNELIUS, N.C. – On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 0039 hours, Cornelius Police Department officers responded to 18711 Ruffner Dr., #1E, in reference to a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a stab wound. The victim has been identified as Demetri Niji McGruder, 24. McGruder was pronounced deceased.
The suspect, Makayla Hooks, was placed under arrest, charged with second-degree murder, and transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
