Weekly Newsletter 10/25/24

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

It has been a very exciting week! We learned about our sister school; K-5 students had an assembly on Monday and 6th-8th grade students had an assembly on Thursday. Sister Schools is a non-profit educational organization that promotes compassion, service, and social responsibility in students in local schools in Uganda. Our sister school is Kiyunga. At our assembly Salmon Bay students learned about students in Uganda and the supplies they need. We learned that supplies like pencils and crayons which we have such an abundance of and often take for granted are needed for their peers in Uganda. A pencil for a student in Uganda is precious, students use the same pencil all year until they cannot sharpen it anymore. You would never find a pencil or crayon discarded or on the floor.

You should have received a flyer describing the kinds of supplies students are collecting to support their peers in Kiyunga. Currently 3,400 students in Seattle are participating and we are excited to be included. There are 6,400 students in Uganda that will benefit. When we have our second assembly, we will see the impact of the donations that students collect.

On Wednesday, our K-5 students had an author’s visit, and it was dynamic. We got to meet Gobi the dog and learn of his adventures, as well as purchase books about Gobi and Lara the Cat, who lives with Gobi.

On Thursday, Fifth Grade and Middle school students had the opportunity to go to Ballard High to see the play “Charlotte’s Web” that some of our former students are performing in. It was a great event, and students and staff enjoyed it greatly.

Next week is an exciting week as well. We have our annual Halloween parade for K-5 students and middle school students will have their annual block party. More info below…

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Dixon

Enrichment Fees for K-5 Families:

You should have all received letters outlining the 2024/2025 Enrichment Fees. During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee at the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee). It allows our teachers the opportunity to choose the programs, projects and events that can best enhance their curriculum and excite their class. The fee this year is $100 per student, scholarship funds are available.

Payment Options:

  • We have an online payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the payment portal by logging in to your student’s SPS Source account. Click here for instructions on how to access your student’s Source account and the SchoolPay system. Once you are logged in the Source, navigate to SchoolPay using the menu on the left side of your screen.
  • You may drop off a check at the Main Office. Checks should be made out to Salmon Bay School. Please write Enrichment Fee and your student’s name(s) in the For/Memo line on the bottom left part of the check.
  • You can request a scholarship through your students’ teacher or Salmon Bay Elementary Social Worker Allie Ash.
  • There is also an option to add a scholarship donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.

The due date for Enrichment Fees is November 8, 2024.

Enrichment Fees for Middle School Families:

At the middle school level, we operate with a pay-as-you-go model for our outdoor and experiential learning opportunities. To better help families plan, we wanted to provide you all with a list of a few upcoming approximate fees:

  1. Spring Enrichment Program Fee: approx.$250 due in late February/early March. This fee allows us to take all our middle schools students on adventures across this city in March. More information to come later this fall.
  2. 7th and 8th Grade Camps: approx.$400 in late May/early June. This fee allows us to take all our 7/8 students to overnight camp in early June

K-5 Halloween Parade:

When: Start at 1:45pm

Where: Track/Upper field

Please check with your individual teachers for any class activities happening. Parents are invited to view the Halloween Parade. Please see Principal Dixon and Assistant Principal Taylor at the upper field gates to sign-in as a visitor. If you are assigned to Volunteer in a classroom for a class party, please stop by the main office to sign in as a Volunteer.

Middle School Block Party:

Salmon Bay Middle School ASB is planning a Halloween Block Party for Thursday October 31st from 2:25-3:15 PM. Classrooms on the 3rd floor will have different activities: dancing, movie, karaoke, board games, photo booth, trick or treat corners, etc. This is a fun social activity and Salmon Bay Middle School tradition. School appropriate costumes (see below) are encouraged but not required. There will also be a costume contest! We are still looking for parent volunteers as well as snack donations. If you are able to help, please sign up here: Block Party Sign Up.

Costume Guidelines and Expectations:

We are requesting that students bring their costume to school and change prior to the to change prior to the Halloween parade/classroom celebration. We suggest students wear clothes that they can wear under their costumes, if possible, so they can just layer their costume on top without having to spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

If your student plans to wear a costume, please also review the following guidelines:

  • Please make sure the outfit is appropriate for the classroom environment. All costumes should adhere to school policies for dress code, messages, and safety.
  • Costumes need to be non-violent in nature.
  • Weapons and toy weapons of any kind are not allowed.
  • Avoid costumes that are dressing as people from other cultures.
  • No costume masks.
  • Make up, if used, should not be disguising the identity of the wearer e.g., whiskers and freckles, not face paint.

Happy Diwali! May your year be filled with light, love, and laughter.

News From the Library:

Elementary Families:

WOW! The Finding Gobi author's visit was amazing and so engaging. Meeting Gobi, the dog, was especially fantastic. Thank you again to the Salmon Bay Community and FOSB for making this possible financially. The fund-a-need (FAN) funds from the Spring Auction are really helping our community with events, MORE BOOKS, and eventually new library furniture.

Middle School Families:

A huge goal of mine to make our "teen" or "YA" section of the library better with use of the FAN funds! In part the new furniture will give us more space for new teen books, but also more displays and a clear section for our teens. I am in the process of building a book order, but if you have suggestions for books, authors, or series I would love your input. The age range should be appropriate for 12-15 with some leniency depending on content and student interest.

Please use this form to provide book suggestions.

Reach out with questions!

Notes From the Nurse:

A few important reminders:

  • Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
  • Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
  • Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
  • Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!

I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!

Attendance:

Morning Arrival/Absence:

The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.

To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.

Multiple Day Planned Absence:

If your student is going to miss more than two school days, please fill out the Planned of Absence Form and submit this form to the main office at least one week in advance of the absence. Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are unexcused.

Riding home on the Bus with a friend:

If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We do require a signed note/phone call or email from a parent/guardian giving permission for their student to ride the bus with a friend, please include route number and full names of students. Bus pass request must be made at least one hour prior to dismissal so please plan ahead of time!

Picking up students for Appointments:

If you are picking up a student for an appointment, please call the main office 5-10

minutes before your arrival so we can call your student down for pick-up. It gets quite

busy, and a call serves as a great reminder to us and helps us keep everything moving

on time.

If you have any questions regarding attendance please contact our Attendance coordinator, Ileana De Leon.

Cafeteria Notes:

No Food or Drink Sharing Policy:

Parents, to keep all students safe, and to avoid conflicts with food allergies, we have a no food or drink sharing policy at Salmon Bay.

This has been announced to students during lunch, but some still insist on sharing, or asking for the food/drink of table mates. Your help with discussing this with your child is appreciated.

Evie Taylor, AP

Recess Reminders:

It is starting to get cooler and wetter. Please remind your student to go to school with weather appropriate clothing. Unless there is heavy rain the expectation is that students are on the playground during recess times.

Crossing Guard Needed:

We are still hoping to find a Crossing Guard. This is a paid hourly position. Please contact Principal Dixon if you are interested. Also, feel free to share the news with any community members who might be interested.

We live in a digital world where technological advancement and their integration in our lives grows deeper and faster each day. The nation, and indeed the world, is rallying around the growing recognition that social media and excessive screen time are contributing to serious mental health concerns among our youth. To address this, we must focus on prevention by learning the latest research, establishing good habits, and setting boundaries at school and home early on.

FOSB’s PIE Committee and select Salmon Bay K-8 staff invite our community to join us for a viewing and post-discussion of Screenagers - the original version focused on middle- and high-schoolers on Nov 6, and the newest elementary version on Nov 13 in the cafetorium. Free childcare and pizza available - RSVP here to guarantee we have sufficient staffing and food for your child(ren). Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact PIE Chair, Sylvia Loh.

After School Programming Survey

Please take FOSB’s After School Program Caretaker Survey! Help shape the future of after-school programs at Salmon Bay. Your feedback will help us create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. Currently, classes are offered through Grade 6 due to low enrollment by middle school children. Caretaker input is also needed to see if we should expand after-school programs for middle schoolers! Survey is open through the end of November.

FOSB Racial Equity Fund Call for Proposals - NEW DEADLINE: 10/31

FOSB’s Racial Equity fund is intended to align with our commitment to anti-racism work. Funds are available for programming to address the needs of those most directly impacted by racial injustices at Salmon Bay School. Each is estimated to be between $250-2000. Our extended fall proposal deadline is October 31st. Please submit a proposal (1-page max) to Cynthia for how you would use the funds. Proposals can include trainings, community events, talks, etc. Proposals will be evaluated by the Racial Equity Fund Committee, with their funding recommendations presented to the community at the November 21st FOSB Board meeting. Additional rounds of funding will take place throughout the year. Please reach out to Racial Equity Fund Chair Cynthia Anderson (parent of 4th and 7th graders) with questions.

Supplies needed: Tennis Balls

Good afternoon. I am Jason, one of two occupational therapist assigned here at Salmon Bay. I was just wondering if anyone in the PTSA has any used tennis balls they’d be willing to donate? I can repurpose them and cut them up and use them as chair leg floor protectors for our classrooms. The more the merrier!! Please leave any donations at the front office with Jason's name on them.

Middle School Ski Bus is Happening!

My name is Taylor Dos Santos and I am a parent of 3 kids that attend Salmon Bay. I am volunteering as the Program Coordinator to get ski bus up and running again here at Salmon Bay! I am excited to announce that we are partnering with Mohan Skiing and Boarding School to provide a ski bus for Salmon Bay middle schoolers!

It is important to note that this ski bus is not run through Seattle Public Schools/Salmon Bay K-8. SPS no longer allows the ski bus to happen during school hours. We know many of the kids and parents were sad to hear that ski bus went away last year, but we are pleased to offer a new program for this winter!

What is it?

A six week ski/board bus to Snoqualmie.

There are three options:

1. Ski lessons and transportation

Cost: $740*^

2. Board lessons and transportation

Cost:$740*^

3. Transportation only

Cost: $475*^

* Lift tickets and equipment are not included in the cost of lessons/transportation. All students must have their own lift ticket (a season pass or a daily lift ticket). Students without a lift ticket will not be allowed onto the bus as they would be unable to ski. Equipment is also not included—you can rent equipment for your child for the season.

^ Mohan does provide scholarships. Please visit this link to apply.

When is it?

Fridays after school. The buses will pick up from Salmon Bay at 4pm and arrive back between 11-11:30pm. Dates:

January 10

January 17

January 24

January 31

February 7

February 21

When you go to register, you will notice that for the Transportation only students, it only has Waitlist spots. Mohan wants to be sure that students who need/want lessons are able to register before children who only want transportation. It is still important to register now for transportation only, as the waitlist will be processed on a First Come/First Serve basis. We will leave the lessons and transportation up for one week before we begin processing the waitlist.

For more information and to register, click here.

Please read the policies outlined by Mohan! They will not provide refunds after November 29th. Children can be dismissed from the program for not following program rules/inappropriate behavior. Refunds will not be given to children who are dismissed from the program.

Parent Volunteer Need:

We need parent volunteers to make this program run smoothly! We believe we will need at least 3 parent volunteers (plus me!) to chaperone the buses each week (this number can change based on how many students sign up) Additionally, we need 2 emergency drivers, 1 male and 1 female each week. The emergency drivers can drive in the same car or separately.

Volunteers must sign up on the Mohan website and have a background check. Mohan has created a step by step document that shows volunteers how to apply. Find it attached here.

For more information on volunteers and to register as a volunteer please visit this link.

What's in the Lobby?

Please limit to one costume per kiddo. Also, help us keep the costumes tidy as you look through them.

Fall Costume Exchange Now through Friday, November 1st.

LAST CALL! Thank you to all the families who donated gently used costumes to our drive! All costumes are currently hanging on clothing racks in the front lobby. Costumes are available to take home now! Unclaimed items will be offered to the school’s theater department (for upcoming performances), our K/1 classrooms (for dress-up) and community charities, so nothing goes to waste. Looking forward to the school costume parade at the end of October!

Costume donations are still accepted - please hang them on the racks in the lobby.

Seasonal Clothing Exchange through Wednesday, November 20

Drop-off anytime in the school front lobby

Do you have gently used clothing and outerwear that your family has outgrown? Drop items anytime in the designated box located in the school’s front lobby. Looking for gently used attire for you and your kids this season? Join us at our first annual Friendsgiving potluck and clothing drive on Wednesday, Nov 20 in the cafetorium. The collection of clothing will be made available during this event, to be taken for free or accompanied by a gift of any value to the FOSB Direct Giving Drive to fund FOSB-supported school-related expenses this year. Unclaimed items will be kept for our community and/or donated to a local charity. Volunteer here to help the event run smoothly! Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Co-Chair, Chase Treisman.

Lost & Found

Please remember to have your kids check the lost & found periodically - there's already a full rack, and more comes in daily!

More photos can be found here.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a lot of clothing left on the playground. Once it gets wet from the rain we can’t bring it in until it is dry (due to mold), which can be tricky this time of year.

Little Free Library

Did you know there's a little free library in the lobby? Show it some love and drop off gently used books inside for anyone to peruse.

There's also a book cart stocked with items from the PIE (Parent Information Exchange) Committee. Check out these great resources as well!
