Have you ever wondered what life would be like without MPA?
In the movie "It’s a Wonderful Life," James Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) discovers exactly what life would have been like if he had never been born. He visits a world that does not recognize him or what he meant to the people of his town or even his own family. He soon finds out that his world was a better place with him in it.
The same can be said for being a member of MPA. Just imagine what life would be like if you didn’t have MPA advocating for you in Lansing. Or think about what your life would be like without all the networking contacts you have through MPA. Consider never being able to call MPA and have one of our talented pharmacists answer your technical, legal and/or regulatory questions. The list goes on.
The moral of the story is that life is better with MPA. And it’s time to renew your membership if you haven’t already. Be sure to do so before Dec. 31 and continue receiving all the benefits of a life with MPA!
Now that’s a wonderful life!

GSK: Drug Combo Cuts Risk of Death
by 42% in Type of Blood Cancer
British drugmaker GSK says its experimental cancer drug Blenrep in combination with other treatments reduced the risk of death by 42% in multiple myeloma, a common type of blood cancer, at or after first relapse compared to an existing treatment.
An interim analysis of data from a trial dubbed 'DREAMM-7' showed the drug in combination with the drug bortezomib plus the steroid dexamethasone showed statistically significant overall survival results compared to a standard of care daratumumab combination as a second line or later treatment of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, GSK said.
The data projects that on average, patients on the Blenrep combination will survive nearly three years longer, GSK said.

AbbVie's Parkinson's Drug Improves
Patient Mobility in Late-Stage Study
AbbVie's experimental drug to treat early Parkinson's disease helped significantly improve patients' ability to carry out daily tasks such as eating and walking, months after the drugmaker disclosed its success in a separate study.
The late-stage study tested the safety and efficacy of flexible doses of the once-daily drug, tavapadon, ranging from 5 milligrams (mg) to 15 mg, as a monotherapy, the company said on Monday.
AbbVie acquired the drug through its $8.7 billion purchase of Cerevel Therapeutics last year as its rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira, once the world's best-selling treatment, faces a sharp fall in sales due to competition from close copies.
"Although questions remain on tavapadon's competitive profile, this shows at least some payoff for the Cerevel transaction," said Piper Sandler analyst Christopher Raymond.

Program Aims to Bolster Data
on Respiratory Pathogens in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) sentinel surveillance program collects statewide data to track circulating respiratory pathogens in Michigan. The sentinel surveillance program is a volunteer-based program through which clinics and health systems in Michigan provide a limited number of specimens to the BOL for processing and generation of pathogen activity reports. However, numerous areas of the state, including the northern regions of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, have little to no data submitted to the state.
To enhance sentinel surveillance data in the State of Michigan, the Michigan Pharmacists Association, the Collaboration for Advance Pharmacy Enterprises (CAPE) at Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, and the MDHHS BOL are launching a project to enroll community pharmacies as sentinel surveillance sites. We are looking for volunteer pharmacies to participate in a pilot program for the 2024-25 respiratory season. Sites will be provided materials and training to collect specimen for individuals with symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection and asked to submit 10-20 specimens to the MDHHS BOL monthly. These data will be used to generate pathogen activity reports for various regions in Michigan.

HHS Extends PREP Act Through 2029
The Department of Health and Human Services has extended the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act Declaration for Medical Countermeasures Against COVID-19 until December 31, 2029. This extension continues liability immunity for the manufacture, distribution, administration, and use of specific medical countermeasures related to COVID-19. The amendment is effective as of Jan. 1, 2025.
-
Extension Period: The PREP Act Declaration now extends through December 31, 2029.
-
Scope:
- Provides liability immunity to covered persons against claims of loss related to the administration or use of designated medical countermeasures, except in cases of willful misconduct.
- Authorizes state licensed pharmacists to order and administer certain vaccines and authorizes pharmacy interns and qualified pharmacy technicians to administer certain vaccines, when specified requirements are met.
- Authorizes state-licensed pharmacists to order and administer certain point-of-care tests and authorizes pharmacy interns and qualified pharmacy technicians to administer certain point-of-care tests, when specified requirements are met.
-
Reason for Extension: Despite the public health emergency for COVID-19 ending on May 11, 2023, HHS has determined there remains a credible risk that COVID-19 may again pose a public health emergency in the future. This extension aims to prepare for and mitigate that risk.
