Bennett Boosts CAP Cadets' Pilot Plans Through Advanced Flight Training Academy
| |
Lt. Col. Morgan Bennett (above center) of CAP’s Great Lakes Region helps to stoke the fire of flight for cadets (pictured with her) as she leads the Advanced Flight Training Academy in Columbus, Indiana.
The accelerated, immersive 30-day program started in 2021 gives cadets the opportunity to earn their private pilot’s certificate with a combination of ground school bookwork and a practical flying experience.
The academy is one of CAP’s success stories when it comes to enlarging the hangar, so to speak — giving young women a chance to break into the traditionally male-dominated world of aviation. That opportunity may turn into a role in easing the national pilot shortage.

A routine summer holiday precautionary search and rescue mission earlier this month along the Colorado River took an unexpected turn for the Arizona Wing’s Yuma Composite Squadron when members were asked to transport two injured raptors —a barn owl and a prairie falcon — from Lake Havasu City to Yuma.
This was the first flight of its kind in the wing, and it went smoothly, with Maj. Stu Smith and Cadet Airman 1st Class Steven Smith providing safe transport for the raptors.

The search and rescue team consists of firefighters and paramedical personnel from several Twin Cities metro fire departments whose purpose is to provide resources to community first responders in emergencies, particularly collapsed structures and confined space rescue situations.
The seven participating Minnesota Wing members were each provided a card listing their simulated injuries suffered in the structure collapse.

2022 National AEO School Called 'a Huge Success' | |
More than 60 aerospace education officers from 26 CAP wings and all eight regions recently attended the 19th annual National AEO School at Patrick Space Force Base in Florida.
The AEO School provided information about their duties and responsibilities as AEOs to help them become more efficient and effective in CAP's Aerospace Education program.
This year’s class took field trips to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. Dynamic hands-on activities, using some of CAP’s STEM Kits, also proved very popular.
Maj. Gen. Ed Phelka, CAP national commander, and Brig. Gen. Regena Aye, national vice commander, visited the school and participated in the field trip and classroom activities. “Overall, the school was a huge success,” said Dr. Jeff Montgomery, CAP’s director of aerospace education.
