War in Ukraine:
Considerations for Speaking Out and Making a Difference
|
|
How can we help? That is the question individuals and organizations are asking throughout the world as a devastating humanitarian crisis unfolds in Ukraine. There aren’t any right or wrong answers, but there are myriad ways that people can make a difference. For example, Apple and Disney are just two of the powerful brands taking steps to stop doing business with, and in, Russia. Through actions and words, many companies are also clarifying their firm beliefs that this horrific situation must end.

Q&A with Amy Stevens, OCPRSA’s Newest APR!
|
Meet Amy Stevens, who just joined the ranks of approximately 5,000 PR practitioners nationwide who have become accredited in the field. Amy’s enthusiasm for the APR process is sure to encourage all of us who are considering it.
Q: Please tell me about you. How did you become involved with OCPRSA?
A: I currently work as a strategic communicator for Water Systems Consulting (WSC), a unique consulting firm that provides engineering and communication services to municipal and private clients in the water industry throughout California and the Pacific Northwest. I manage projects that include branding, strategic goal setting, event planning, community outreach, media relations, and more! I became involved in OCPRSA years ago when I worked in education; as a new public relations professional, it provided invaluable training, networking and opened my eyes to various career possibilities.
Q: Congratulations on earning your APR! What motivated you to become accredited?
A: I love data and always looking for more data-driven, strategic ways to legitimize my work and the public relations profession. I didn't learn too much about ROI and KPIs while earning my degrees and I knew the program would be a great learning and professional development experience. The process surprised me in so many ways; I was not expecting the community spirit of the study group and the other APR professionals!
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?
A: Don't put yourself or "public relations" in a box; there are so many ways to bring public relations practices to integrated communication strategies. Even though my current title doesn't include PR, my background is a big selling point for our clients and the skills I've learned in the industry—and through earning my APR—benefit their projects.
