Hello San Antonio PR Pros!

Things are hopping in San Antonio! As a chapter, we continue to welcome new members and have had some amazing professional development programs. In August we had a great crisis communications webinar and on September 14, we met at the Alamo Café for an engaging panel discussion on the emergence of A.I. and how it impacts our industry.

Be on the lookout for some fun in October when we offer a members-only event and behind-the-scenes experience at the San Antonio Zoo. The event will be in the afternoon on Friday, October 20, watch for details. We are also working on a DE&I webinar, for noon on October 24.

As we near the end of this leadership year, we will be asking our members to vote for the 2024 Board, led by Jason Meza, APR. There is still time to volunteer to serve on the Board or a Committee. Reach out to Jason if you are interested.

If you are not receiving chapter communications about upcoming events, please make sure your profile on our website is up to date. You can edit your profile at any time and add information and/or a headshot as well. Visit www.prsanantonio.com and log into the member’s section to access our Chapter Directory and to make changes to your profile.

As always, we welcome your feedback. If you have any ideas or suggestions for our Board to consider, please don’t hesitate to contact me, at terri.behling@havenforhope.org.

Until next time…

UPCOMING EVENTS

Time to start thinking about your award-winning work

Has one of your events gone viral? Is the website you helped redesign getting more traffic? Do your stakeholders feel better-informed thanks to the communications plan you created? Now is the time to start thinking about all your successes this year because entries for the Del Oro Awards will open soon.

Modeled after the PRSA Silver and Bronze Anvil Awards, our annual Del Oro Awards recognize the outstanding contributions and excellent work of individuals in the public relations field. There are three types of awards:

  1. La Plata – recognizing achievement in PR campaigns
  2. El Bronce – recognizing outstanding PR tactics
  3. Individual Awards – recognizing individuals who have made a significant impact to the PR profession

When the time comes – and it will get here fast – you will be able to submit all your fantastic work in as many different categories as you’d like. All you have to do now is start gathering it and start saving any more work you do from now until December. More details about awards deadlines will be forthcoming.

CHAPTER NEWS

Who was Marilyn Potts?

As we plan for a new round of fundraising for the Marilyn Potts Scholarship, it’s important to remind more recent chapter members who she was and why we named a scholarship after her.  Only those of us active in the chapter since the early 2000’s would have had any contact with her and known of her good works and contributions to the Chapter.

Marilyn came to San Antonio from Wichita, Kansas in 1997 where she had graduated from Wichita State University and worked in a number of public relations positions in the Wichita area after graduation. She was an accredited member (APR) and 2005 president of the San Antonio PRSA Chapter. She was also the professional advisor to the Student Chapter of PRSSA at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and in 2004, had served as Chapter Laision to the group. She quickly established herself as a consummate professional in her busy working role for Methodist Healthcare System and in her leadership abilities within the Chapter.

Then tragedy struck. In early May of 2006, Marilyn K. Potts, APR, died of complications resulting from an automobile accident at the age of 58. At the time, she had been a public relations and marketing specialist for the Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio for six years. She was survived by her husband, Michael Potts, APR, a daughter, Kimberly Garrett, of Overland Park, Kansas, three brothers and a sister.

In early 2007, Chapter leaders Kami Watson Huyse, APR, Paige Ramsey-Palmer, APR, Fran Stephenson, APR, Fellow PRSA, Monica Faulkenbery, APR and Chisty Goodman, APR Fellow PRSA who all knew her well, proposed the creation of a perpetual scholarship in Marilyn’s name. The Chapter Board concurred and decided it would be most fitting to honor her memory with an annual $1,000 scholarship for up-and-coming students at UTSA – in particular, PRSSA members.  Fundraising was slow at first, but accelerated when I was Chapter president in 2009, and by 2011, we had enough of an endowment to begin awarding a $1,000 scholarship annually. Since then, we have awarded 11 scholarships with plans to expand both the number of annual awards and the amount of the scholarship as we build the endowment.

This is where we’ll need your help. In the coming weeks and months, we will begin a new round of fundraising for the Marilyn Potts Scholarship in hopes of at least doubling the endowment.  Public Relations students need our help now more than ever and we hope when you’re asked, you will give generously to help those coming up behind us.

PR's Oversight Role in A.I. Management

AI is a big deal and bigger still with the ChatGPT release in 2022 and the White House AI Bill of Rights. Some of us compare AI to the introduction of calculators, email, spell check and GPS as time saving devices. But there are concerns beyond those time-saving attributes.

We all know about the promise of AI as a tool to brainstorm, research, create, and collaborate; learn about new topics, track and report, monitor media, get ideas and inspiration, onboard new employees, develop content for websites and social media, and generate story narratives.

But there also has to be accountability and ethical considerations for the use of these instruments. We already know some of the negative outcomes, like discrimination, privacy and job loss. There has to be a human factor to introduce or reinforce integrity and authenticity. Our job in PR is essential to fact check, proof, customize, and catch bias and other unwanted results.

Law professor Ifeoma Ajunwa* shared on NPR how AI is used by businesses to monitor and control their workers. Employers use technology to quantify their workers’ productivity. This function is often called the mechanical manager or boss ware, as A.I. gauges the number of keystrokes per hour or the number of emails sent and answered. It transcribes phone conversations, which can go awry when reps have accents that the bot doesn’t understand.

AI has been used and misused in operations like hiring for many years.

Recruiters have been using A.I. to parse resumes by identifying key words to winnow down candidates to interview. And now it's being used to interview people.

Automation bias occurs due to the data being fed. We need to know how to prevent introducing bias into A.I. tools. We also must be careful to not trust results too much. A.I. is well known to be a “pathological liar” because of AI Hallucinations, which produce outputs that are not real, do not match any data the algorithm has been trained on, or any other identifiable pattern.

Experts warn us to not use AI where people’s jobs and lives will be impacted. That’s a lesson we all should take to heart.
