A January 2025 Update from Quentin and Karen Nantz

Return to Ethiopia

In our ministry trip to Ethiopia in 2023, we had the privilege of collaborating with the Interdenominational Theological College, where the warmth and enthusiasm of both the staff and students left a lasting impression on us. However, despite our shared aspirations, the college faced challenges in enrolling students in the PS78 Teacher Education Program. Undeterred, we are excited to shift our focus to the newly established Addis Covenant Theological Seminary (ACTS), led by our dedicated friend Solomon, who played a pivotal role during our previous visit. Solomon is not only ready but also passionately committed to advancing the PS78-TEP in Ethiopia.

With a strategic plan in place, Solomon has invited us to come to Ethiopia and teach from February 10th to the 22nd. He aims to raise awareness of the program among over 250 teachers across four cities, the first of which will be the capital, Addis Ababa, where we worked last time. In this dynamic city, we will host an immersive one-day seminar tailored for teachers, aimed at fostering a deep understanding of the critical role that the PS78-TEP plays in shaping a biblical worldview through education.

Additionally, we are excited to reintroduce a one-day Christian parenting seminar, building on the success of our 2023 initiative, which garnered enthusiastic responses from local church parents, thanks in large part to Solomon’s exceptional translation into Amharic. This endeavor not only underscores our commitment to biblically based education but also emphasizes the transformative power of faith-based learning and community involvement.

Our next destination for presenting the PS78 TEP is the vibrant city of Hawassa, nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Hawassa in the breathtaking Great Rift Valley. Located just 273 km (170 mi) south of Addis Ababa. With a remarkable 80% of its population identifying as Protestant believers, Hawassa is a community rich in faith and values, boasting numerous church-based and Christian schools.

Next, we will head to Adama, a city that lies just 99 km (62 mi) southeast of Addis Ababa. This remarkable place has a rich Christian history, having been renamed by Emperor Haile Selassie after Biblical Nazareth following World War II, then renamed Adama in 2020. Adama is a beacon of education, with numerous church-based schools and institutions founded by dedicated Christians.

Finally, our journey to present the PS78 TEP will take us to the town of Hoshana, nestled 231 km (143 mi) southwest of Addis Ababa. Founded by visionary missionaries in 1929, Hoshana has blossomed into a thriving center of Protestant Christianity, with 80% of its population embracing evangelical beliefs. This has paved the way for the establishment of many Christian schools.

Why is the PS78-TEP needed in Ethiopia?

The necessity of the PS78 Teacher Education Program in Ethiopia becomes abundantly clear when we consider the current landscape of education in the region. While there are numerous "Christian" schools, many of them merely wear the label without embodying the principles they profess, operating under stringent government regulations that effectively silence the very essence of their faith. This irony is further compounded by a significant shortage of qualified Christian educators, leading these institutions to fill teaching roles with individuals who may not share or understand the foundational values of Christianity. The PS78 program emerges as a beacon of hope, designed to cultivate a new generation of teachers who are not only professionally equipped but also spiritually grounded, ready to inspire students with a genuine understanding of their faith and its relevance in today's world.
