A major arterial road just west of Edmonton’s downtown core, 124 Street has reopened after a two-year renewal project. The two-year timeline allowed for this city-shaping project to go forward with minimal impact to the many businesses in the area.
As Edmonton prepares to be a city of two million people, renewal projects allow us to reimagine and rebuild what our city must be.
Construction along 124 Street, between 111 Avenue and 118 Avenue, consisted of a new boulevard design with trees and renewal of the road (i.e. new road surfaces, curbs and gutters), with a focus on accessibility.
Renewal of this major arterial road introduces new tactile walking surface indicators to improve accessibility for people with visual impairments, while new boulevards increase the separation between people walking and driving.
In front of businesses, wider sidewalks make the busy area safer and more accessible, while beautification measures make the area more inviting.
Work along 124 Street also included:
- Upgraded street lighting to decorative black heritage arms with pedestrian lights and LED bulbs.
- Intersection upgrades such as curb extensions and pedestrian crosswalks with flashing lights to improve operations and safety.
- Wider sidewalks and more public space in front of businesses with added seating.
- Underground utility work such as new Low Impact Development systems, catch basins and stormwater upgrades.
- Bus bays to support transit.
