Black History Month: Join us in celebrating and amplifying Edmonton’s Black communities
February 1, 2024
Black History Month offers Edmontonians the opportunity to recognize the legacy of African, Caribbean and Black Canadians and their communities in our city, while also reflecting on the challenges facing Black communities. The City of Edmonton is committed to building a more inclusive community where everyone belongs.

“This year the City is proud to have partnered with the Edmonton Heritage Council and the Africa Centre to form the Black History Month Initiative. This Initiative has provided support to 15 different organizations which are hosting events throughout the month,” said Salima Ebrahim, Chief of Staff and Corporate Lead, Anti-Racism and Reconciliation. This initiative is also sponsored by the Edmonton Community Foundation.

The following events are taking place throughout the month and are supported by the Initiative:

The Black History Month Initiative is just one of the many ways the City is delivering on the recommendations outlined in the Anti-Black Racism Plan.

The theme for Black History Month 2024 is Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build. We encourage Edmontonians to visit edmonton.ca/BlackHistoryMonth to see how you can participate as an ally or learn more about anti-racism.

The City is committed to being a continuous listener and learner in this space in order to create a better future for all Edmontonians who call this city home.
