Boulevard gardens create diverse streetscapes and promote community pride
July 28, 2022

Edmontonians can add character and vitality to their neighbourhoods by creating boulevard gardens to transform underutilized space into vibrant streetscapes. Boulevard gardens promote community pride, ecological diversity and climate resilience.

If there is a City boulevard, the strip of City land between the sidewalk and the road, adjacent to your property, you are eligible to apply for a free boulevard gardening permit.

Obtaining a permit for your boulevard garden is simple. To get started, visit the boulevard gardening web page, familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines, and choose a permit option. Most gardeners will choose a Declaration for low-impact gardening, while others with more ambitious projects may require a License of Occupation (LOO). The annual fee is waived for boulevard gardens submitted in 2022 and 2023.

To celebrate the launch of the Boulevard Garden program, a few lucky green-thumbed Edmontonians will have their gardens featured on the City of Edmonton Instagram and Twitter accounts. For eligibility, simply share a photo of your garden with #boulevardeningyeg —keep an eye on our official social channels for more information.

We can’t wait to appreciate the vibrancy your creations bring to Edmonton’s streets.

Happy gardening!
