Celebrate Black History Month and participate in upcoming Anti-Black Racism Action Plan community engagement sessions
February 8, 2023

In recognition of Black History Month, the City of Edmonton is pleased to support community partners and sponsor events that celebrate and allow others to learn about the histories, cultures, and traditions of Black communities in Edmonton and Canada.

These events include an AfroQuiz, an Afro-Caribbean Family Day event, a mental health workshop, Feed the Soul YEG Dining Week, and more. Visit edmonton.ca/blackhistorymonth to see a list of community events.

This month is also an opportunity to reflect on and advance work currently being done to ensure that Edmonton’s Black communities feel safe and included — presently and in the future. As part of its support for the UN International Decade for People of African Descent, the City of Edmonton continues to work with Edmonton’s Black communities to develop an Anti-Black Racism Action Plan to address and combat the specific instances of racism Black individuals face.

This action plan is driven and guided by Edmonton’s Black communities and their needs; supported and facilitated by the municipal government of Edmonton; and led by external consultants who have significant experience — both lived and professional — in anti-racism and building anti-Black racism action plans.

The consultants are hosting upcoming sessions for Edmonton’s Black communities and individuals to provide their input and feedback into the action plan. These diverse and valuable perspectives are essential to developing the plan, and you are encouraged to attend and engage in an upcoming session to ensure your voices and experiences are heard.
If you’re unable to attend a session, you can also share your feedback by filling out a survey at surveymonkey.com/r/edmontonabr, emailing edmontonabr@gmail.com, or calling 780-496-8806. All of this information and any updates will be available at edmonton.ca/antiracismstrategy.
