City of Edmonton announces opening date and event for new Northeast River Valley Park
September 5, 2023

Edmonton’s newest River Valley Park opens to the public on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 11 a.m. Northeast River Valley Park (previously known as Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch North) is located at 903 153 Avenue NE. The acquisition and opening of this park comes at a time when the City of Edmonton is investing in the wellbeing of Edmontonians, providing opportunities for quality outdoor recreation experiences and expanding the Ribbon of Green network for biodiversity and ecological integrity.

Previously planned to open in August 2023, the City’s Parks team had to pause some outdoor preparations until the migratory bird nesting season ended. Preparations are now entering the final stages and the City is excited to welcome visitors later this month. The park is 190 acres of developed parkland, larger than Hawrelak Park’s 168 acre footprint and equivalent to 150 football fields. The park connects with popular River Valley trails and includes unique features, such as charming barn bridges, an ornamental lake for non-motorized paddling activities, a large events centre for gatherings and weddings, trail connections, children’s playground and public washrooms.

On opening day, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be many activities for the public including an Event Center open house, Edmonton Public Library (EPL) story walk, nature and recreation activities, neighbourhood showcase, and a City tradeshow with displays and giveaways. Food trucks will also be on-site.

The City of Edmonton officially acquired the park on May 15, 2023, but did not open immediately to the public in order for staff and crews to perform proper inspections, maintenance work and prepare the facilities and grounds for public use. The park is still closed to the public, prior to the September 24 opening date.

Residents and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide input on the long term plan for the park, including its name, as part of a strategic concept-planning process expected to begin Fall 2023. Until the park is formally named, it will be referred to as Northeast River Valley Park. Information about public engagement opportunities will be announced when available.
