As evacuation orders have been lifted for both the Town of Edson and Yellowhead County, the City of Edmonton will close the evacuee reception centre at EXPO Centre at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2023.
Since June 9, nearly 1,800 Albertans were registered at the EXPO Centre, which provided temporary lodging, food services, clothing, animal care and health care. Close to 4,100 meals were served to evacuees.
On and offsite, Animal Care and Control Centre registered 146 animals, and provided care, supplies and support.
“We are pleased that residents of the Town of Edson and Yellowhead County are now able to safely return home,” says City Manager Andre Corbould. “This has been a very active fire season, and we’ve been proud to support our neighbours. Day or night, we are ready to answer the call if other emergencies happen in our city or beyond.”
In addition to evacuee support, the City of Edmonton provided four fire crews to assist with efforts in the Town of Edson, and worked with Town of Edson staff on training for running an emergency response centre, to help build capacity for the rest of the wildfire season.
