City recreation facilities reopen for low intensity activities
March 3, 2021

The City of Edmonton will begin offering indoor fitness opportunities starting on March 5 in accordance with Step 2 of the Government of Alberta’s Path Forward plan, which allows the general public to participate in low intensity fitness activities.

Fitness centres will reopen for low-intensity group fitness classes and individual low intensity fitness activities. Facilities will open in phases over the next two weeks to allow time to recall approximately 140 full-time and part-time staff from temporary layoff to train staff and prepare facilities for public use.

The following schedule of amenity openings are subject to change depending on the availability of resources or further provincial announcements or restrictions:

Fitness Centre Openings:

  • Kinsmen Sports Centre (March 5)
  • Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre (March 5)
  • The Meadows Community Recreation Centre (March 10)
  • Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre (March 10)
  • Clareview Community Recreation Centre (March 15)

The City will consider opening additional fitness centres to accommodate demand as required.

Low intensity activities are defined by being able to breathe and talk easily while engaged in the exercise. These include yoga, pilates, walking, treadmill walking and light strength training.

The City will relaunch personal training opportunities within facilities, which includes high-intensity one-to-one sessions throughout facility fitness centres, gyms, studios, and fieldhouses.

Staff will monitor activities and signs will outline guidelines around low intensity expectations.

The City is exploring opportunities to reopen aquatic centres as clarity is gained around aquatic activities.

Residents will be required to reserve a time slot through Move Learn Play before visiting a facility. Drop-in visits are not permitted. Fitness centre and in-facility group fitness program bookings open the afternoon of March 4.

Low-intensity fitness programs in facilities will begin on March 8. People can register for these programs through Move Learn Play. All virtual programming and outdoor winter recreation opportunities will continue at this time.

New measures will be in place to ensure public health guidelines are followed. These include a new requirement to maintain three-metre distance from others while in facilities, to avoid gathering within common areas and outside facilities, to practice regular hand hygiene and to stay home if experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. Masks or face coverings are now mandatory at all times when in a City recreation centre, including while involved in low intensity fitness activities.
