Continuous rain and rising river waters create dangerous conditions
June 20, 2023

Edmontonians should continue to exercise extreme caution around the North Saskatchewan River and its tributaries.

Due to the continuous rain, the river, as well as shorelines and trails directly near the river, may be unsafe. Edmontonians may expect high water levels and increased current flow in the coming days. This may cause some flooding in areas running along the North Saskatchewan River and other natural waterways.

Edmontonians should:
  • Stay out of the water.
  • Stay away from low-lying areas along the North Saskatchewan River and other natural waterways until the water recedes and any necessary cleanup can occur.
  • Obey all trail closure signage.
  • Keep pets away from the river and creeks during this time.
  • Keep watercrafts off the river due to fast moving water, strong currents and debris in the water.

Mill Creek Ravine trail system, north of 76 Avenue to Connors Road, has been closed.

The river level is currently at 5.2 metres. Low-lying trails close at six metres. River Valley Operations are continuing to monitor the situation and may close trails this evening or in the early morning.

Low-lying trails that may close include:
  • Highlands - Dawson trail
  • Capilano - Gold Bar Trail
  • Emily Murphy - Kinsmen Trail
  • River Loop Trail (Fort Edmonton)

Other low-lying trails may be closed on short notice, which is why it’s important to check the City of Edmonton’s trail closures map before exploring the city’s river valley and parks.
