Extreme weather response to be lifted Tuesday, January 21

January 20, 2025

With temperatures expected to improve this week, the City of Edmonton will deactivate its extreme weather response on Tuesday, January 21 at 9 a.m. The final night of operation for the expanded overnight shuttle service (west route) and overnight emergency shelter at Al Rashid Mosque will be Monday, January 20 with service starting that evening and ending the morning of Tuesday, January 21.

The extreme weather response was activated on Friday, January 17 due to the extreme cold. The City has been running three dedicated overnight shuttle routes to transport people to shelters and supported Al Rashid Mosque to operate overnight shelter from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., providing up to 50 spaces to supplement the existing shelter capacity funded by the Government of Alberta.

The two overnight shelter shuttle buses will continue to operate north and south routes every night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. until March 31 to help transport people to available shelter spaces. More information is available at edmonton.ca/ExtremeWeather.

The Navigation Centre, operated by the Government of Alberta and Hope Mission, continues to offer access to 24/7 emergency shelter, income and ID support, health services, housing support and a pet-friendly service.

The deactivation of the extreme weather response is being announced today to give individuals time to adjust their plans for accessing shelter.

If you are concerned about someone outside in the cold, there are steps you can take at any time to help:

  • Call 911 for someone in serious distress or cases of emergency.
  • Call 211, press 3 for 24/7 Crisis Diversion non-emergency support for shelter, intoxication and mental health.
