Extreme weather response to be lifted
February 2, 2022

With temperatures expected to improve in the coming days, the City of Edmonton will deactivate its extreme weather response. The final night of operation for expanded overnight bus service will be Saturday, February 5.

The extreme weather response was activated on January 31 due to the extreme cold. Edmonton Transit Service has been operating two dedicated overnight bus routes to transport people to shelters. Up to 88 people accessed the service on a given evening. The City worked with community partners to scale up day services and overnight shelter capacity during the activation.

The temporary shelter operated by The Mustard Seed on the west side of Commonwealth Stadium will continue to operate at a capacity of 150 beds until March 31, 2022. With the end of the extreme weather response, the capacity will decrease from 200 to 150 beds. The City of Edmonton, Homeward Trust and community partners will continue to monitor capacity within the shelter system.

The deactivation of the extreme weather response is being announced today to give individuals time to adjust their plans for accessing shelter.

If you are concerned about someone outside in the cold, there are steps you can take at any time to help:
  • Call 911 for someone in serious distress or in cases of emergency.
