Vision Zero seeks to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Safe, livable streets are essential to a healthy, vibrant city.
Today, the City of Edmonton released the
2020 Vision Zero Annual Report. This year’s report reflects on five years of action in support of Vision Zero. The
Road Safety Strategy 2016-2020 has guided us for the past five years, and its data driven approach to addressing high collision locations, unsafe speeds, and their contributing causes has contributed to a significant reduction of fatalities and serious injuries on Edmonton’s streets.
The
Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025 was built on the success of the Road Safety Strategy and will guide the City for the next five years with an increased focus on equity. Ensuring that our data driven approach is applied equitably across the City will help to make Edmonton’s streets safer for everyone in all seasons, regardless of their age, abilities, or modes of transportation.
Since 2015:
- Fatalities on Edmonton streets have decreased by 63 per cent, serious injuries have decreased by 40 per cent and pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries have decreased by 54 per cent.
- Data-driven investments in safety are making our streets safer and more livable. The City has completed 248 crosswalk upgrades, improved 105 signalized intersections, completed 237 school safety projects and much more.
- City Council, Administration, and community groups took action to establish a safer speed limit on residential streets and in high pedestrian areas in Edmonton. The new 40 km/h default speed limit will come into effect in early August.
- The City has developed new, interactive ways for Edmontonians to explore the improvements that increase safety and livability on our streets such as the Crosswalk Upgrade Dashboard and the Automated Enforcement Dashboard.
The City of Edmonton would like to thank the Edmontonians, community groups, and businesses who have been working hard to make our streets more livable. Together, we can eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Edmonton.
