The City of Edmonton is once again providing residents with the opportunity to drop off furniture, appliances and other items that cannot be picked up through regular waste collection at a series of free Big Bin and Eco Station Events.
The Big Bin Events will run on select weekends between May 7 and September 18 at eight locations across the city. These events enable residents to recycle or dispose of household items too large for regular collection at no charge.
This year, two Big Bin Events will feature additional family and resident-oriented information and activities. While dropping off items, family members can learn about City services and trucks and equipment. These additional activities will be available at the Big Bin Events at Terwillegar Recreation Centre on May 28 and 29, and at Northlands Coliseum August 20 and 21. More details will be posted online at
edmonton.ca/bigbinevents as they become available.
Before attending a Big Bin Event, residents are encouraged to review the list of accepted materials. Items allowed include:
- couches, chairs, mattresses and other household furniture items too large for curbside pickup
- fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and other large household appliances
- computers, televisions and other household electronics
- grass clippings and yard waste, including branches no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft) and 0.75 m (2.5 ft) in diameter (accepted for free anytime during the year)
- tires and scrap metal
- excess household garbage (should not include food scraps or recycling)
All materials will be accepted at no charge including bulky items, appliances and electronics. Residents attending Big Bin Events are required to unload their own vehicles. The City thanks all residents for their patience as significant interest is anticipated in these events and line-ups are expected.
Please note that household hazardous waste, including paint, varnish, household cleaners or batteries, will not be accepted at Big Bin Events. These items should be taken to an Eco Station for proper disposal, at no charge, anytime during the year.
In addition to the Big Bin Events, the City of Edmonton will also hold four free Eco Station weekend events on the following dates:
- April 30 and May 1
- June 18 and 19
- August 27 and 28
- October 1 and 2
These events will occur at all Eco Stations, which will be open between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Free weekends do not apply to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre for residential drop-offs.
The City appreciates the efforts of Edmontonians to properly sort and dispose of their waste, as this helps to divert waste from the landfill and to keep our city clean.
Residents who are unsure how to dispose of particular items, or if an item is too large for regular collection, are encouraged to use the
WasteWise app. The app makes sorting simple, as users can search items and find out how they should be disposed of. WasteWise can also provide weekly collection day reminders, so residents never miss a collection day. Download the WasteWise app for free today from the App Store or Google Play.
