Free Big Bin & Eco Station Events are back
May 3, 2023

The City of Edmonton is again hosting free Big Bin and Eco Station events, providing residents with the opportunity to drop off furniture, appliances and other items that cannot be picked up through regular waste collection.

Eight Big Bin Events will run on select weekends between May 6 and September 17 at locations across the city.

Before attending a Big Bin event, we encourage residents to consider donating items in usable condition to their local donation centre or charity.

A special Big Bin Event will be hosted at Northlands Coliseum on June 10 and 11. This event will have additional activities and information about the City’s Waste Services branch, including on-site trucks and equipment for residents to explore before or after dropping off items.

Before attending a Big Bin Event, residents are encouraged to review the list of accepted materials. Items allowed include:
  • couches, chairs, mattresses and other household furniture items too large for curbside pickup
  • fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and other large household appliances
  • computers, televisions and other household electronics
  • unbagged grass clippings and yard waste, including branches no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft) and 0.75 m (2.5 ft) in diameter (accepted for free anytime during the year)
  • tires and scrap metal
  • excess household garbage (should not include food scraps or recycling)

All materials will be accepted at no charge. Residents attending Big Bin Events are required to unload their own vehicles. The City thanks all residents for their patience as significant interest is anticipated in these events and line-ups are expected.

Household hazardous waste, including paint, varnish, household cleaners or batteries, are not accepted at Big Bin Events. These items should be taken to an Eco Station for proper disposal, at no charge, anytime during the year.

In addition to the Big Bin Events, the City of Edmonton will also hold four free Eco Station weekend events.

These events will occur at all Eco Stations which will be open between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Free weekends do not apply to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre for residential drop-offs.

The City appreciates the efforts of Edmontonians to properly sort and dispose of their waste, as this helps to divert waste from the landfill and to keep our city clean.

Residents who are unsure how to dispose of particular items are encouraged to use the WasteWise app. The app makes sorting simple, as users can search items and find out how and where they should be disposed. WasteWise can also provide weekly collection day reminders, so residents never miss a collection day. Download the WasteWise app for free today from the App Store or Google Play.
