Ice bikes glide into Edmonton for the winter season
December 29, 2023

Winter has arrived in Edmonton and the City of Edmonton Outdoor Adventure Program, in partnership with WinterCity, has purchased eight new ice bikes. The bikes are coming to ice surfaces in River Valley parks starting at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park.

Ice bikes are bikes on frames, with the front wheel removed and runners along the bottom, so that people can ride on the ice. They are stable and offer an accessible activity to those who cannot skate. The ice bikes will offer a new ice experience for everyone and in particular for individuals who cannot or are hesitant to skate and/or those who have a physical disability. Group rentals for the ice bikes will also be available for a fee.

Outdoor Adventure Programs offer fun in the snow for all ages and provides outdoor programs to community groups, Edmonton and area schools, corporations and the general public. Spend some quality time learning a new skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The City of Edmonton is proud to be a WinterCity and we encourage Edmontonians to get out and celebrate our winter identity through the arts, recreation, events, storytelling and inspired design. Snow clearing of active pathways this winter will create a Winter Priority Loop with clearing done within 24 hours to connect the downtown, University of Alberta and Old Strathcona areas, making this ideal for winter cyclists. Explore the City using the Discover YEG map and get ready to enjoy everything Edmonton’s winter season has to offer.
