Owners of heritage buildings choose to preserve their property in order to share the building’s rich history. Now those who wish to officially designate their property as a municipal historic resource will receive increased funding for eligible repairs and renovations.
For the first time in 13 years, the rehabilitation grant amount for designating a residential historic property will increase from up to $75,000 per home to $100,000 in matching grants. The increase is funded by the current operating budget of the Heritage Conservation program. At the same time, those owners who have previously designated their properties will see an increase in their available maintenance grant from $10,000 every five years to $20,000 in matching grants.
“With the price of materials and equipment going up we decided it was the right time to increase our grants to heritage property owners,” said Scott Ashe, Heritage Planner with the City of Edmonton. “Heritage properties enrich the urban environment. The owners of these properties commit to preservation and act as good stewards for them so that they can be appreciated by all Edmontonians, and the City wants to support them in this effort.”
Maintenance grants for owners of commercial/multi-unit/institutional heritage properties will also see an increase. Owners of these properties are now eligible for maintenance grants of up to $100,000 in matching grants every five years, an increase from $50,000. Rehabilitation grants for these properties are remaining the same, up to $500,000 in matching grants at the time of designation of the building.
Owners wishing to access the grant funds must have their property listed on the
Inventory of Historic Resources, and agree to designate their property as a protected Municipal Historic Resource. Those interested in having their homes designated as historic resources should contact the City’s
heritage planners.
