Information about fireworks on Canada Day
June 29, 2021

Fireworks will be set off over Edmonton's river valley on Thursday, July 1 at 11 p.m.

Staying safe
As health restrictions start to ease, Edmontonians are asked to take precautions where possible this Canada Day. This year’s fireworks display will include more high-level bursts so that people may view them from farther away, allowing spectators to stay physically distanced from others.

We want to remind everyone that voluntary mask wearing is a reasonable choice for some people and one others should respect. Anyone planning to take transit should be aware that as part of the province’s Stage 3 reopening plan, it will still be mandatory for masks to be worn in public vehicles like buses, LRT, taxis and ride shares.

Please stay home if you are sick, as there are some people who are immunocompromised, and children cannot get vaccinated. The fireworks will be livestreamed for anyone who would like to watch from home.

During this extreme heat, drink plenty of water and watch for signs of heat illness. The City’s Extreme Weather Protocol remains in effect.

Fireworks Viewing and Access
The fireworks display will be choreographed to music by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Tune into CBC Radio 93.9 FM and 740 AM during the fireworks to listen.

Pedestrian Access Only (closed to vehicles):
  • River Valley Road, Walterdale Hill Road and Queen Elizabeth Park Road
  • Queen Elizabeth Park Hill
  • 109 Street (between Saskatchewan Drive and the High Level Bridge)

Note: No viewing is available from Kinsmen Park.
Pedestrian access will be unavailable in Kinsmen Park (including trail access), and the High Level and Menzies Bridges after road closures are in effect. Kinsmen playground and picnic areas are closed starting at 6 a.m. on Canada Day.

North-South Pedestrian Bridge Access:
Pedestrian access across the North Saskatchewan River will be unavailable from 9:45 p.m. until 90 minutes after the fireworks:
  • High Level Bridge
  • 109 Street southbound, from 97 Avenue/High Level Bridge to 87 Avenue
  • Menzies Bridge
Pedestrian access across the river will be available via the Groat Road Bridge, James Macdonald Bridge, Walterdale Bridge and the Low Level Bridge.

Watercraft:
For safety reasons, a portion of the river in front of the launch zone at Kinsmen (from approximately the High Level Bridge to the Walterdale Bridge) will be blocked off to all watercraft during the fireworks. Before taking watercraft out on the North Saskatchewan River, check the boat launch notifications. Closures may occur due to water levels, weather, or other situations.

Road Closures on July 1
Expect traffic delays two hours before the fireworks and two hours after the show. Please be patient and courteous to help to make the trip home from the fireworks safe for everyone.

If you need to cross the river, please be aware of the potential for delay and adjust your travel plans accordingly. For road closure details visit the Special Event Road Closures web page or view the Current Traffic Disruptions map.
