City Council initially approved the concept plan from NAIT to Campbell Road in 2014. The City started public engagement activities in spring 2017 to update and finalize the concept for the alignment and station designs, and to advance the project through preliminary design. The City sought feedback from Edmontonians on the preliminary design in 2018, and finalized it in 2019. City Council approved the updated concept plan on January 22, 2019.

Phase 2 of the Metro Line Northwest LRT will move forward when funding becomes available.

The Metro Line Northwest LRT extension will be built in two phases. Phase 1, which will extend the Metro Line from NAIT into Blatchford, is currently in the procurement phase. Procurement is a rigorous competitive process to select a contractor to deliver the project. The City expects to begin construction on Phase 1 in 2020.
