Mobility lanes are returning to Edmonton through the new Summer Streets Program to make streets safer and more livable for everyone. It is one of the ways the City supports people walking, riding, rolling and scootering as they move around Edmonton and enjoy the summer weather.
“Mobility lanes were incredibly well received by Edmontonians throughout the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to safely get outside while staying physically distant from others,” said Jessica Lamarre, Director of Safe Mobility and Traffic Operations. “The many benefits of increased active transportation space on our streets doesn’t end with the pandemic, so the City of Edmonton is excited to now offer the Summer Streets program annually.”
During the week of April 25, the first of three Summer Streets will be installed at Victoria Park Road. In early May, Summer Streets will be added to Saskatchewan Drive, from 109 Street to west of 104 Street, and 104 Street, from Saskatchewan Drive to 78 Avenue. Summer Streets will remain active into the fall, depending on weather conditions.
After streets are swept, temporary flex posts will be added to separate vehicles from people using other active modes of transportation. The speed limit will also be reduced to 40 km/h along corridors that do not have a median separating it from the vehicle lane.
Shared Streets, which was a companion program with mobility lanes in 2020 and 2021, is now part of the Vision Zero Street Labs program. Shared Streets is one of several Street Labs tools communities can choose from to make local streets safer and more livable. Learn more at
