The City of Edmonton observes September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, by reflecting on the painful history and harmful legacy of the residential school system. This day honours residential school survivors and the children who were never returned home along with their families and communities.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action No. 80 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report. Parliament created this federal statutory holiday in June 2021 to ensure public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools are a vital part of the reconciliation process.
In March 2023, Edmonton City Council officially made September 30 a day for City of Edmonton staff to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation through education, reflection, remembrance and community connection.
Commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
To raise awareness and demonstrate solidarity with Indigenous community members, the City of Edmonton will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by:
- Raising Every Child Matters banners in Churchill Square, lowering flags in City Hall Plaza to half-mast and displaying the Survivors’ Flag in City Hall.
- Lighting several Edmonton structures orange on September 30, including City Hall, Edmonton Tower, Muttart Conservatory, Commonwealth Stadium, Rossdale Power Plant, High Level Bridge and Walterdale Bridge.
- Tying orange ribbons on City fleet vehicles and encouraging staff to wear orange shirts, ribbons or pins.
- Hosting Live at Lunch programming at Churchill Square from September 24 to 27 in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council.
- Installing Indigenous artwork at a crosswalk on Bearspaw Drive West and 19 Avenue near Kaskitayo Park.
- Wrapping two traffic control boxes along 23 Avenue at Parsons Road and 111 Street with Indigenous art.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Leadership Symposium: Hosted at MacEwan University, this event aims to promote unity and understanding while providing an opportunity to listen and learn from Indigenous speakers.

Orange Shirt Day Run and Walk: Hosted in partnership with Indigenous Runner YEG, this outdoor event invites community members to participate in a healing walk or run beginning in Kinsmen Park from noon to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend this event, which will include Indigenous vendors, cultural activities and a plant giveaway from Root for Trees to honour the lives and communities affected by residential schools.

Affected programs and services
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day of observance for municipal employees. Edmontonians can expect temporary changes to the following programs and services on September 30.

Edmonton Service Centre and 311: The Edmonton Service Centre and 311 will be closed. After-hours services will be available for urgent bylaw or public safety concerns. Regular hours will resume on October 1.

City recreation facilities: City recreation facilities will be operating under holiday hours with no registered programs. The smaller leisure centres will be open with limited hours. Regular hours will resume on October 1 with drop-in programs available.

Edmonton Transit Service: Buses will run regular weekday service. All school special bus routes are cancelled, including Route 622 to Concordia University. These routes will resume on October 1.

Waste Services: All Eco Station locations will be closed. Regular hours will resume October 1.

Animal Care and Control Centre: The Animal Care and Control Centre will be closed. Regular hours will resume on October 1.
