Update Sept 10, 10 a.m.: City of Edmonton supports wildfire evacuees - Relocation and Adjustment of Services
September 10, 2023

The Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre has registered 7,497 evacuees and 1,314 pets since opening on August 18 to support wildfire evacuations from the Northwest Territories.

Beginning Monday, September 11 at 9 a.m., the Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre will move to the Clareview Community Recreation Centre, 3804 139 Avenue NW, with continuing service hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Evacuees are asked to use Parking Lot C on the North East side of the Centre and enter through Entrance 3. Evacuees are to make their way to Multi-Purpose Room 5 (MPR5) upon entry.

The location at Edmonton EXPO Centre will close Sunday, September 10 at 7 p.m. With the evacuation order lifted for Yellowknife, fewer displaced individuals remain in Edmonton and there has been a reduced demand for services. The operational changes to the Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre reflect the needs of Lower Slave evacuees as Yellowknife residents return home.

The Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre will continue to provide services to Lower Slave evacuees including access to Alberta Health Services, Indigenous Wellness, Service Canada and Hope Mission. Access to City-owned recreation facilities and amenities, transit, and other connections to local organizations will also continue to be available.

Overnight lodging is no longer available at the Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre and will not be provided at the Clareview Community Recreation Centre. The Canadian Red Cross will continue to be on-site to coordinate off-site emergent lodging for Lower Slave evacuees as needed.

Yellowknife re-entry information

The Government of Northwest Territories has provided updated information for evacuees of Yellowknife, Ndilǫ, Dettah and the Ingraham Trail who are in Edmonton, Leduc and Calgary, about hotel accommodations and re-entry flights at https://www.gov.nt.ca/en/public-safety/latest-updates. Evacuees are encouraged to follow the instructions provided.

Evacuees should continue to monitor gov.nt.ca for the latest information and call 1-844-259-1793 or email [email protected] if they need assistance.

Animal Care
Animal Care and Control will not be available at the Clareview Community Recreation Centre, however, pet supplies including food and litter can be picked up at the centre. Evacuees are welcome to use Manning Village Dog Park, a nearby fenced-in, off-leash area, located at Ebbers Boulevard and 144 Avenue.

Transit Service for Registered Evacuees
Wristbands from the Edmonton Emergency Reception Centre remain valid fare on all Edmonton Transit bus and LRT routes as well as on Strathcona County, St. Albert and Leduc Transit until the end of this evacuation.

Donations
Monetary donations can be made through the United Way, Red Cross and Goba Care.

Anyone wanting to donate pet food and pet supplies to evacuees is encouraged to drop these items at the Humane Society, 13620 163 Street NW, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week.
