Interpretive Summary

Raising Hens? Bring on the Cloudy Days!

Did you know that hens see light differently than humans? Their eyes are sensitive to bright UVA and UVB light. In a new study, poultry scientists show that this sensitivity has made hens pretty picky about where they spend their time.

The Importance of Reviewing

Testimonials from Current Reviewers

Are you peer-reviewing manuscripts for PSA? Thorough and reliable peer-reviewers are a vital component of the health and integrity of PSA’s journals. Poultry Science® and The Journal of Applied Poultry Research receive thousands of manuscripts each year that require peer-review. This creates a lofty task for our current volunteer reviewers. PSA needs more individuals to volunteer to peer-review manuscripts, in order to maintain the high quality of science and the operation of the journals themselves,. This is an important and integral role that benefits us all. Here are testimonials on the importance of this role from a few members of last year’s PSA Academy of Reviewers:

Raghad Abdaljaleel

“[A strong peer-review process] helps researchers improve their manuscript’s structure. The reviewer carefully reads and understands the content of the manuscript before giving an opinion about the work. All the comments, notes, and overall corrections that may come from the peer review process can assist the authors in presenting their work at high standards and without errors, so it can reach [its audience] with a high quality.”

Ali Maghsoudi

“As an author, I'm always excited to receive my manuscript revisions from the journal and waiting for the reviewers’ comments to improve my paper. Therefore, when I review a manuscript, I understand the conditions of the authors’ excitement and interest. So, I do my best to complete the manuscript review as soon as possible…to help authors.”

Vincenzo Tufarelli

“Today, the role of the scientific reviewer is fundamental as well as challenging, especially in light of the progress of science and technology. Both the opinion and the point of view of the reviewer represent a valid opportunity for authors to improve their own work, but at the same time, it is a significant moment of growth for the reviewer themself who is confronted with the work of other scientists.”

Performing regular peer-reviews is one of the most important things you can do for PSA. If you are interested in reviewing for Poultry Science® or The Journal of Applied Poultry Research, click here and volunteer today!.
