PSA Journals & the Importance of Reviewers
One of the primary goals of the Poultry Science Association is the publication of poultry research papers in Poultry Science® (PSJ) and The Journal of Applied Poultry Research (JAPR). Poultry Science® is the top ranked poultry research journal. The impact factors continue to increase and based on 2020 data from Clarivate Analytics, PSJ is 3.352 and JAPR is 1.178. (See the chart below.) In 2021, the acceptance rate for PSJ and JAPR was 53% and 61% respectively. The quality of the papers published in these journals establishes their reputation and draws both readers and new paper submissions. Both journals are now open access and last year the number of downloads from PSJ was 4.7 million from readers in 127 countries and JAPR had 6.7 hundred thousand downloads from 112 countries. The results of the effort that PSA and its members put into the journals is apparent by these journal readership results.
The editorial boards of both journals are dedicated to thorough and timely review of each paper, but they cannot do this alone. The reviewers are a crucial part of the peer review process. The PSA board and the editorial boards of the journals cannot thank those that participate in the review process enough. However, one of the largest issues the association faces is getting people to serve as reviewers. In this regard, I often think of the Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule) where 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. Many of the same people are invited and often accept the invitation to review papers submitted to the two journals. However, the number of papers submitted puts a large burden on those few reviewers. As a result, many invitations are declined, and the editorial board members must work harder to find the two peers needed for the review. This is one factor that contributes to the turnaround time from submission to the paper’s final decision. The sooner the review invite is accepted, the sooner the paper gets reviewed which helps speed up the whole process. So, if you are not getting invites but are interested in providing thorough and timely reviews for either journal, you can go to the PSA website and click on the volunteer link in the upper right hand corner of the home page or click here to express volunteer interest. I look forward to seeing the impact factors and rankings of PSA’s two journals when they are released later this year. I anticipate all of us as PSA members will continue to be satisfied with the direction the journals are going readership results.

Interpretive Summary
A Link Between BCAAs and Woody Breast

Scientists in this study examined the effects branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) had on broiler growth and performance.

The study results provide some interesting data on the occurrence of woody breast with supplemental BCAAs.

More About Me:
I remember when I was a kid and got a chicken as a present from my mom. I think it was a she and we had a fun time the whole summer together. At the end of summer, my mom came to me and said she is grown up and ready to be part of our dinner tomorrow :-(

I was shocked and now I understand why some individual's reactions can sometimes be different from the facts of our industry.

Female Ostrich Egg Production in the Absence of Males

This study, published in The Journal of Applied Poultry Research, recorded egg production and egg weight parameters for ostrich females penned without males. Although there was initial doubt that the females would continue to lay eggs in the absence of males, the study proved otherwise.

The results identify peak months of egg production and quality of eggs throughout the study.

Midwest Poultry Federation
Updated COVID-19 Guidelines

Midwestern Poultry Federation Convention is approaching soon (March 22-24, 2022) and organizers have been providing up-to-date information regarding the upcoming event's COVID-19 guidelines on their website.

The latest information (effective as of February 24, 2022) follows the city of Minneapolis' lifted mask mandate. This comes as hospitalizations and cases of COVID-19 have substantially reduced in Minnesota.

For attendees, this means you will not be required to wear a mask at the 2022 MPF Convention. This includes the Minneapolis Convention Center, local restaurants, bars, hotels, and other public areas while in the city. The latest information can be found on midwestpoultry.com/covid-19.
