Happy New Year!

It is a new year and the Poultry Science Association is hard at work to increase member benefits and opportunities. With 2024 comes exciting new projects. We are underway developing a new website that will increase membership value, welcome a vast digital networking presence, and provide exclusive access to member-only resources.

We are also looking at ways to provide our stakeholders with additional opportunities including expanding professional development resources, funding opportunities through the PSA Foundation, and further developing our Annual Meeting as the premier event for all poultry scientists (See you in Louisville, KY this July!).

As the year progresses, we cannot wait to share more information on these developments. This is an exciting time to be a member of our Association. If you have peers who would benefit from all the Association has to offer (and will be offering), we welcome your encouragement in their joining as a member. 2024 will be the year to have membership with PSA included in your professional wheelhouse.

Cheers to a fantastic start of 2024!

Interpretive Summaries

Heat stress may cause lung injury in broilers

Heat stress is an important environmental stressor that can contribute to economic losses for commercial broilers. A team of researchers in China conducted a study to determine the impact of heat stress on broiler respiratory systems. The results show that prolonged exposure to heat stress can lead to lung injuries. The study also highlights suggested results to prevent lung injuries associated with heat stress.

Hatching broilers on-farm

A team of researchers sought out to determine if hatching broilers on-farm would result in better welfare as opposed to hatching chicks in a hatchery and then transporting them to a farm. Results of the study yield that on-farm hatching may be a viable option for some metrics including hatchability and reducing mortality during rearing.

Depopulating with ventilation shutdown + steam

With previous outbreaks of HPAI in 2015 and 2022, quickly and efficiently depopulating flocks was crucial to preventing the spread. However, preferred methods (foam, containerizing gassing, and mechanical) are not always an option when quick action is required. This recent study from The Journal of Applied Poultry Research suggests using steam to accompany ventilation shutdown as an alternative, yet effective, method for depopulation.

Grant Loyd

Current Employer:

Alternative Design Manufacturing & Supply Inc.

Area of Expertise:

Design and Manufacturing of Animal Housing Equipment specific to the requirements, care, and environments for poultry science related research.

Where did you grow up and did you have poultry in your youth?

I grew up in Northwest Arkansas surrounded by the poultry industry. My grandfather Jack Loyd, started Springdale Farms which was one of the first poultry processing companies after his time in the military. He later sold it and moved his family in the 1970's to a life on the farm where we grew up working our pullet, Layer Hen farm. In the late 80's my father started manufacturing business. Alternative Design was born focusing on providing specialized custom housing solutions that allowed the customer to have design input to better fit the need of the reseach and animals that they were working with. My formative years were spent working on the shop floor building these products and learning why certian specifications were necessary to the betterment of the environment they were being built for.

What was your first job out of school and what were your responsibilities?

My first job out of school was as the purchasing agent for Alternative Design. We were a growing company and at the time did not have an official purchasing department or process. Therefore my responsibility was to develop a process to ensure the quality of the materials that we were using and a bidding process to ensure that we got the best price possible.

If you had a motto that applied to your daily professional career, what would it be?

"Turn your anxiety and fears over to the Lord, and focus on your controllables."

What value does your PSA membership offer you?

PSA offers you a membership and access to the best of the best, focused on a very specific goal, better research centered around poultry. Better care and safety for the animals, better quality of research data, and in turn giving the world a better health from animals and humans alike.

What is your favorite poultry breed?

Leghorn: Egg laying prowess, savvy attitudes and bold personalities

Fun fact about me!

I have been blessed with one child, a daughter Logan, with goals of becoming a veterinarian.
