Keeping Chickens Calm During Catching and Handling
In a recent study, poultry scientists investigated the best way for manually catching chickens in a production setting. The two main ways for manually catching a chicken are the one-legged catch and the two-legged catch. The researchers examined chickens after catching to see how the two methods compare when it comes to potential injuries and effects on chicken behavior.

New Social Pages
PSA’s Student Organization, the Hatchery, is working to make information for students more widely available. One component of this process is restructuring social media presence. Where did you grow up and did you have poultry in your youth?
I grew up in a village of central China. My family raised chickens, ducks, and geese for eggs and meat. Poultry meat and eggs from my family's backyard flocks tasted great, but cleaning poultry manure was a tough job, which was one of considerations in selecting "Agricultural Structure, Environment, & Energy Engineering" as my college major.
| | |
What was your first job out of school and what were your responsibilities?
I got a job as an Assistant Research Professor (Research Scientist) with Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. My responsibilities were research and Extension services (e.g., environmental control and energy management for greenhouses and poultry houses) for urban agricultural production in Beijing.
If you had a motto that applied to your daily professional career, what would it be?
"It's hard but important to balance work and family."
What value does your PSA membership offer you?
I benefited from being a PSA member in many ways:1) meet people from both academia and industry; 2) get opportunities for collaboration and communication with PSA peers; and 3) connect with students of PSA community.
What is your favorite poultry breed?

The Impacts of Probiotic and Prebiotic Combinations for Layers
This short communication from The Journal of Applied Poultry Research examines the results of probiotic and prebiotic combinations against Salmonella contamination. This study utilized the direct plate count method to enumerate Salmonella, proving more accurate when compared to former studies using different methods to establish Salmonella. Furthermore, the study examines the benefits of this research for layers.
