Long Range Plan for Public Education

T
he State Board of Education, with assistance from an 18-member steering committee, plans to adopt goals for the public education system through the year 2030.
To gather information about these topics, the board is hosting
nine meetings
around the state and will soon release an online survey.
It is essential that school counseling be included in the long-range plan for public education!
If school counseling is not included in the Long Range Plan, it will be very difficult to promote policies that support the work that you do, that will reduce student to counselor ratios and that will reduce non-counseling duties assigned to school counselors.
Please be a voice for your profession in your community.
Share this information with your colleagues, students, and families and encourage them to participate as well.

EEF Disaster Relief Grants Help TCA Members
|

After Hurricane Harvey blasted the Texas coast in the fall of 2017, TCA offered special EEF Disaster Relief Grants to TCA members affected by the storm and its aftermath. Jennifer Wilson is one of 10 recipients and shares her story below:

Hurricane Harvey has greatly impacted my school community, with 90% of our student population displaced. Some students are still displaced.
My campus, Betty Sue Creech Elementary in Katy ISD, flooded and we are currently at the University of Houston campus of Cinco Ranch.
The campus has been transformed into an “elementary school”. Currently, some classrooms have two teachers to a room with two classes of students. Portables were built for more space for learning, but some classes will continue to stay together all year long.
As a counselor, I am seeing the psychological impact that Hurricane Harvey has caused for the students, families, and staff. Some students that I am meeting with are continuing to have anxiety when it rains and fear that another hurricane will strike again.
I am very grateful that I received the EEF-Disaster Relief grant. The grant helped me rebuild my office. Our campus is a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) campus, so I purchased resources to help me empower the teachers in their classrooms. I also purchased resources that will be beneficial in teaching classroom guidance lessons. Small group resources were also purchased that focus on feelings and empathy. Licensing Board Openings
The Governor will soon be considering appointments to the boards that regulate Licensed Professional Counselors and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.
This is a great opportunity for TCA members to seek appointments to the boards that regulate the work you do. The boards include both professional and public members who are appointed for six-year terms. Board members do not receive compensation for their service but expenses to attend meetings are reimbursed. Terms expired in February 2017 for one professional and two public members on the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, and for two professional and one public member of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists. Some of the current members may be eligible for reappointment.

Coalition for Public Schools Community Meetings

The
Coalition for Public Schools
is hosting community meetings around the state to build support for their work in advance of the 86
th
Legislative Session.
The Coalition for Public Schools is comprised of religious, child advocacy, and education organizations representing more than 3,000,000 Texans statewide.The Coalition opposes the expenditure of public funds to pay for tuition vouchers, tax credits, and other types of vouchers and believes vouchers are a political distraction from the state’s top priority: providing high quality neighborhood public schools that meet the educational needs of every Texas child.
