DEAF HISTORY MONTH
March 13 - April 15, 2021

Deaf History Month is from March 13th to April 15th, and PSD would like to share just a few of the many moments of our school history that have impacted so many different communities over the years. We have shared weekly tidbits of how PSD has contributed to society, and we hope you are enjoying traveling back in time with us and celebrating our school’s accomplishments.

2021 George W. Nevil Award Recipient & Graduation Speaker

March 22, 2021

It is my pleasure to announce that Isidore Niyongabo is selected as our 2021 George W. Nevil Award Recipient. 

Isidore is currently the President of National Black Deaf Advocates, the founder and Executive Director of International Deaf Education, Advocacy, and Leadership (IDEAL), and Director of Human Resources at Convo Communications. Most recently, he was appointed for the second time to serve as the Co-chair for the 4th term of the Federal Communication Commission’s Disability Advisory Committee.  Read more........

We're calling on you to help get the word out about an upcoming blood drive for the Red Cross using the attached flyer. 
You can also feel free to sign yourself up here. Here are the quick details:
  • Date: Thursday, April 15
  • Time: 11am-4pm
  • Location: Girard College (2101 S College Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19121)
  • Red Cross staff would be able to assist hearing impaired donors on the 15th if they were coming to donate blood.

All participating donors will also receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card via email as a thank you.

Camp Catch Them Young 2021
From July 12-23, 2021, Gallaudet University, through the Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), will host the second iteration of Camp Catch Them Young, a program for college-bound deaf and hard of hearing high school students of color up to the age of 19. Similar to last year, this Camp will be virtual.
 
PS:  For those in high school or college age there are some assistant positions available. Please go to www.CampInSign.org and click leaders/assistants to apply.  Applications for work positions are due by April 15, 2021.

Scholarship Open to Graduating Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Seniors- Deadline to Apply: May 14, 2021
TDI’s Communications Access Scholarship Program was set up to recognize the community volunteerism work that the graduating high school seniors who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened, or deaf-blind have contributed to. These students are recognized for their passion and capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. Read more
The Client Assistance Program (CAP) has moved its office to 101 Greenwood Avenue, Suite 470, Jenkintown PA 19046. The office is located only minutes from Center City Philadelphia and is close to major highways providing travel across Pennsylvania. We look forward to continue working with individuals with disabilities seeking services from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), Community Rehabilitation Programs and Independent Living Centers. Zoom adding automatic closed captioning
for all free accounts
Zoom plans to roll out support for automatic closed captioning to free accounts this fall as part of its efforts to make the service more accessible, the company has announced. If you’re a free account holder who needs access to the feature before then, Zoom is allowing users to manually request access to the Live Transcription feature via a Google Form linked to in its announcement.
