MAKING FUNERALS MEANINGFUL DURING AN AGE OF COVID-19
A pastor in the PSD sent me a link for a panel of experts discussing challenges and changes for funerals in the age of the COVID-19. The leader of this panel is Dr. Kenneth Doka, a graduate of Concordia Seminary, St Louis, 1973. Dr. Doka is an international and national leader in the Hospice Movement. He is joined by two nationally well-known funeral directors who operate many funeral homes on the east coast. Read Full Article

FACE MASK CHALLENGE
When Lutheran World Relief launched the 75,000 Face Mask Challenge less than a month ago, they knew the compassionate response would be overwhelming - and that good people like you would meet the challenge. They just had no idea you'd pull it off so quickly. Thank you!

As COVID-19 continues to make its way around the world, the poorest communities stand to bear the heaviest burdens. Cloth masks are a first barrier of defense, and the need is only increasing. To reach even more people in dire need, Lutheran World Relief is collecting 75,000 more masks! How many will you make to help stop the spread? For more information and to sign up for the challenge visit  lwr.org/masks.
INDIA IN CRISIS: EMERGENCY RELIEF

MISSION ESSENTIAL
Our MISSION ESSENTIAL this week directs us to one of the most comprehensive resources being offered to churches during this crisis. On their  ChurchPulse Weekly podcast both David Kinnaman of the Barna Group and leadership guru Carey Nieuwhof provide timely information and compelling interviews on how churches just like yours are not only navigating the COVID-19 reality, but moving forward in mission in the midst of it all. For this week, check out the episode featuring pastor Mark Sayers, who shows us how God is doing some deep work in the Church by touching the hearts of leaders across the Globe. Here is your MISSION ESSENTIAL link:  churchpulseweekly.org .
CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE THIS SUMMER IN ANAHEIM
Dr. John Pless will be presenting a class entitled: Letters from a Lonely Lutheran: Confidence and Joy Under the Cross, June 30-July 2 . This class will examine the pastoral letters of Hermann Sasse as he encouraged brother pastors the world over to continue steadfast in the hope that does not disappoint. Sasse wrote to pastors often living in isolation brought about by geography or confession. He filtered all of theology and all of life through the lens of the cross. Hosted by Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Anaheim. Register Here! Questions? Contact Rev. Darrin Sheek at [email protected].
PRAYER REQUESTS

Coronavirus  -  Please be in prayer: for infection rates to slow and cease; that those who have been infected will heal quickly; that healthcare staff and first responders will be sustained as they carry this very heavy burden; that our churches, schools and preschools would be sustained and reliant on our loving God and His guidance; for courage and peace for our pastors, lay leaders, church and school administrators, faculties, and all church and school workers who are making difficult decisions, creating innovative solutions for continuing to reach people for the sake of the Gospel; for our federal, state and local leaders to seek God's will as they make important decisions and take actions against this disease; for God to bring many, many people to faith through this situation, and that His Church would be more effective than ever in sharing the Gospel with the lost and loving our neighbors.

Rev. Harry Matelski is having a heart catheterization procedure.

Family of Sharon Reichman, who passed away on Monday, March 4. Prior to retirement  and moving to Arizona, Sharon worked part-time for the Pacific Southwest District Office. Please keep her husband, Jerry, who also previously worked for the PSD, in your prayers. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

DCE Noël Fairchild is beginning treatment for melanoma.

Family of Reverend Arlo Janssen, who  was Called to Glory Sunday, May 3 after declining health.  He served congregations in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Northern California, at the University of Arizona, and at Hope Lutheran Church, Bisbee, AZ before retiring.  He was a loved member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sierra Vista, AZ.  A celebration of his life will be held in the future.
RETIREMENTS

Bethany Lutheran School, Long Beach announces the planned retirements of two of our beloved teachers:  Diana Orr (19 years of service) and Chris Boerrigter (44 years of service, 19 of them at Bethany!) at the end of this school year.

Like the true professionals they are, Mrs. Orr and Mrs. Boerrigter have risen to the challenges of remote teaching during this pandemic, certainly an unexpected circumstance to end their careers. These faithful servants have been a vital part of our school staff and will be greatly missed, but we know they will continue to use their many gifts to serve the Lord in the future.

We do not have a date yet to celebrate these two amazing educators, but we are collecting congratulations and memories from friends, former students and colleagues in preparation for the event. Would you take a moment to help us celebrate their many years of service?

You may email your thoughts/memories by May 30 to Mary Fink at [email protected]

And/or your congratulatory cards to the teachers at this address:
