Though there are many elements to a fire prevention plan, here are a few safety points to consider:
■ Check for damaged or overloaded electrical outlets, cords, and cables.
■ Never leave portable heating devices unattended.
■ Use and store chemicals safely.
■ Exercise good housekeeping practices, including preventing the accumulation of flammable and combustible materials and making sure such materials aren’t near an ignition source.
■ If you allow smoking in your facility, restrict it to designated smoking areas.
■ Train staff about fire emergency procedures and conduct fire evacuation drills, making sure exit routes aren’t locked or blocked.
■ Verify that smoke alarms and fire sprinklers are properly installed and working.
■ If you have portable fire extinguishers on site, make sure they are accessible and in good working condition. If you expect employees to operate the extinguishers, train them how to operate the equipment safely and effectively.
