PSI Looks Back at a
Successful 2022

Yes, 2022 had its share of headwinds—including inflation, the ongoing pandemic, political and global unrest, and supply-chain glitches—but it was still a year of accomplishments for the PSI Chapter. Here’s a summary of the chapter’s “greatest hits” this year:

■ PSI elected its slate of officers for the 2022–2024 term during its virtual PSI Election Meeting in March:
—President: Shawn State (shown here), Pratt Recycling (Conyers, Ga.)
—Vice President: Tamara Mayberry, Pioneer Industries International (Itasca, Ill.)
—Secretary/Treasurer: Kathy DeLano, Texas Recycling (Dallas)
The chapter’s other elected leaders include three directors-at-large: Jim Keefe, GIE Media Group/Recycling Today magazine; Shawn Logan, WM Recycling; and Maite Quinn, Closed Loop Partners.
PSI Chapter President Shawn State rounded out the new PSI board of directors by naming the following members to lead the chapter’s committees:
Associate Member Affairs: Marty Seaman, Resource Recycling Systems
Communications: Rick Post, Pratt Recycling; David Tratner, Wilmington Paper Corp.
Events: Nancy Womack, Greif Recycling
Government Affairs: David Kluesner, International Paper

Safety: Michael Hughes, Casella Waste Systems
Scholarship: Nini Krever, Wilmington Paper Corp.

■ PSI awarded $32,500 to 12 students in its annual scholarship program, setting records for the total funds awarded and the number of student recipients. This year’s scholarship total included one $5,000 grand-prize scholarship and 11 $2,500 merit scholarships. ■ PSI hosted a well-attended reception in March during the Southeast Recycling Conference & Trade Show in Destin, Fla. The event “provided networking opportunities for PSI members to interact with both PSI member companies and guests,” said PSI Communications Co-Chair Rick Post of Pratt Industries.

■ PSI had a high-profile presence at the Paper and Plastics Recycling Conference (PPRC), held in October in Chicago, beginning with a "PSI Palooza" reception (shown here).
PSI Chapter President Shawn State of Pratt Industries moderated the “OCC/Mixed Paper” session, which featured Evan Barrett of GFL Environmental Recycling, John Grinnell of Greif Recycling, Jeff Ryalls of International Forest Products, and Sean Davidson of Davis Index.
Past PSI President Nini Krever of Wilmington Paper Corp. moderated the “Moving Materials Revisited” panel discussion, which featured Karyn Booth of Thompson Hine LLP, Gregory Edwards of Virginia International Terminals, Matt Schrap of the Harbor Trucking Association, and Krissy van Niekerk of Maersk.
Kari Talvola of Fibre Trade Inc.—a PSI member company—moderated the “Commodity Focus: High Grades” session, which featured PSI Secretary/Treasurer Kathy DeLano of Texas Recycling, Ysabelle Dupuis of Kruger Recycling, and Ron Gable of PROSHRED Security/Redishred Capital Corp.
Other PSI members participated in additional PPRC workshops, including Past PSI President Leonard Zeid of Midland Davis Trading, Bill Moore of Moore & Associates, Johnny Newsome of Sonoco Recycling, and Stephane Dube of Cascades, among others.

■ PSI recognized notable chapter members and leaders throughout the year in its “Profiles in Paper” interview series, including John Grinnell of Greif Recycling, Maite Quinn-Richards of Closed Loop Partners, Shawn Logan of WM Recycling, Keith Ristau (retired) of Far West Recycling, Nancy Womack (shown here) of Greif Recycling, and Kurt McLaughlin of Quincy Recycle, among others.
■ PSI launched a new Linkedin page in November, which communicates PSI-related news and announcements to a social media audience. Followers of the new PSI page can peruse, like, comment on, or forward PSI's posts—or repost them on their personal or corporate Linkedin feeds. ■ PSI distributed a “PSI Monthly Safety Message” throughout the year, covering topics such as worker fatigue, fire prevention, lift truck training, slips/trips/falls, electrical safety, distracted driving, cold stress, and ladder safety.
