PSI Looks Back at

a Successful 2023

PSI Chapter President Shawn State, Pratt Recycling

As the end of the year approaches, it's a great time to look back and reflect on the PSI Chapter's highlights in 2023. Here’s a summary of the chapter’s “greatest hits” over the past year:

■ PSI awarded $40,000 to 15 students in its annual scholarship program, setting records for the total funds awarded and the number of student recipients. This year’s scholarship total included one $5,000 grand-prize scholarship and 14 $2,500 merit scholarships. (Click HERE to view a list of the 2023 recipients or to learn more about the PSI scholarship program.)

■ PSI's current membership stands at 76 member companies, including six new members this year and several other new members awaiting final approval.

■ PSI hosted a well-attended reception in February during the Southeast Recycling Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, Fla. The event provided networking opportunities for PSI members to interact with representatives from PSI member companies and guests.

■ Once again, PSI had a high-profile presence at the Paper and Plastics Recycling Conference (PPRC), held in October in Chicago, beginning with a PSI reception (shown here).

PSI also had a booth in the PPRC expo hall and sponsored a panel session titled “Legislated Disruption,” which focused on recycled-content and extended producer responsibility laws, featuring comments from ISRI President Robin Wiener and Shannon Crawford Gay of Waste Management.

 ■ PSI recognized notable chapter members and leaders throughout the year in its “Profiles in Paper” interview series, including Stephanie Ragans of Wilmington Paper Corp., Levell Hairston of International Paper, Chris Rivers of Pratt Recycling, Jon Moon of Greif Recycling, Michael Timpane of Resource Recycling Systems, and Amy Phillips of International Paper (shown at left).

■ PSI's Linkedin page, launched just over a year ago, now has 186 followers. The page communicates PSI-related news and announcements to a social media audience. (Click HERE to access the PSI Linkedin page, and select “Follow” under the ISRI Paper Stock Industries Chapter logo and name on the opening page.)

■ PSI distributed a “PSI Monthly Safety Message” throughout the year, covering important safety topics such as workplace violence, lockout/tagout procedures, visitor safety, heat-related illnesses, facility housekeeping, and confined spaces, among others.
