If you haven’t yet registered for this year’s Stewardship Kaleidoscope Conference in New Orleans, you’ll want to act soon to be sure you won’t miss such outstanding speakers as the Rev. Jean Marie Peacock, who will deliver the afternoon plenary address on Tues., Sept. 23.
Ordained in 2000 by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Peacock — who served as Vice Moderator of the 216th General Assembly (2004) — experienced her call to ministry on the U.S.-Mexico border, where she spent ten years accompanying Central American refugees fleeing persecution. Since then, she has been a change agent in a variety of ministry contexts, including five years as a community organizer in South Tucson, Arizona, building a coalition to effect change and school reform.
Not long after Peacock had moved with her husband to New Orleans, their home and the congregation she served were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. In the aftermath of the catastrophic storm, she was called by the Presbytery of South Louisiana to coordinate disaster recovery and congregational development. It was during this time that Peacock, who also holds a master’s degree in social work, founded Project Homecoming, a nonprofit ministry that rebuilt hundreds of homes with the assistance of thousands of volunteers. For the past nine years, she has been the organizing pastor of Be Well-Come Together (BWCT), a new worshiping community sponsored by Faith Presbyterian Church that supports the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of neighbors in Harvey, Louisiana. Throughout her ministry, Peacock said that she has “witnessed the resiliency that comes with faith — a faith that calls us to collaborate, share and multiply resources, advocate for social justice, and witness to the transforming power of God’s love.”
In addition to leading a plenary session, Peacock will also be offering a workshop titled, “Missional Ministry in Your Own Backyard.”
