In December, 2019, the doors will open to the NEW Firehouse Ministries emergency shelter for the homeless. We will finally have a building that will allow us to tailor our services not only to our current population of chronically homeless men, but also to families, youth, and those that are medically fragile. Even though we have come such a long way since the beginning days of the Capital Campaign we still need your help! The bricks campaign will allow you to honor a loved one by investing in what truly matters. Each 4×8 donor brick, only $100, can be inscribed with up to three lines and will be featured on the path leading up to the building. Buying a brick is a permanent reminder that you care about the homeless, and it leaves a lasting legacy for your children, yourself, your company, or your loved ones. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to come to the shelter to serve a meal and see your very own brick? To purchase a brick online, please complete the form by clicking the following link: or visiting the website at

It is now week 6 of construction for the Habitat for Humanity house in Center Point, Alabama. Birmingham area churches of this Presbytery are sponsoring this house. This is the 27 th year that Birmingham Presbyterians have participated in the construction of Habitat houses. The house for 2019 is being built for the Parham family. We have had teams from South Highland, Independent, Shades Valley and Edgewood work at the site. Other churches are planning to send teams.
As of last week, the wood sheathing has been installed for the outside walls and the roof. The insulation sheathing has been installed, and installation of the vinyl siding has begun. The framing for the exterior walls has been caulked to the floor. This will help prevent leakage of heated or cooled air to the outside. This is one technique Habitat does to make the homes energy efficient. A few photos of the construction are included above. To see more, please go the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley’s Facebook page.
Please contact Ralls Coston at the Presbytery office if you want to volunteer or contribute to this project.

The next collection date is Saturday,
November 2. Bring your usable discards, gently used clothing, etc., to the Presbyterian Home for Children's reception center in the rear parking lot, below the playground of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church. Volunteers will be on hand to unload your vehicle and to give you a receipt for your tax-deductible donation. The center will be open from 8 AM - 12 noon. To volunteer or for more information, email Terry Tingle.
