Luke 6:17, 20-23

This week we hear Jesus proclaiming what have become known as the Beatitudes. A series of statements that begin, "Blessed are the...". The beatitudes reveal that sorrow and joy are intertwined and inseparable from one another. Jesus speaks blessing upon those who suffer, yet does not promise that their suffering will be alleviated in this life. Jesus doesn't promise that our sufferings will go away, but that He will be with us in and through all the suffering we encounter in our life. Because we know the great depths of His suffering, we can find courage and hope in His presence amidst our own pain.

On the way to Mass: When was a time that you felt left out, or that someone had something you didn't?

On the way home from Mass: How can we remember that even in our hard times, Jesus is with us?

Challenge of the Week: When you pray as a family this week, pay special attention to those who are suffering---perhaps from weather, illness, or other circumstances.
