Breast Cancer and Older Women

Half of newly diagnosed women are over 60, and more than a fifth are over 70...But the path to early detection and effective treatment isn't always clear for older women. [Harvard Women's Health Watch]. "U.S. screening guidelines recommend that all women start receiving mammograms when they turn 40 or 50 and to continue getting one every 1 or 2 years. This routine continues until they turn about 75 years of age or if, for whatever reason, they have limited life expectancy. At that point, whether a woman continues to have mammograms depends on thoughtful discussion between the woman and her health care team about what is appropriate for her specific situation." Helping Older Adults Thrive
Although the pandemic forced closure of our physical Centers this spring, we have continued to help our members thrive with wellness calls, household supplies and PPP deliveries, fresh and self-stable meal deliveries, and a wealth of programs online along with innovative programs with supplies delivered contact-free to our members' homes.
How Does Your Garden Grow?

Gardening has numerous health benefits for older adults -- providing healthful food, decreasing dementia risk, boosting mood and combating loneliness. PSS Center members may not be able to enjoy the comaradarie of group gardening, but a pilot program spearheaded by the NYC Department for the Aging shows us how to reap the benefits of gardening year-round!

On September 17, 2020, staff from PSS Andrew Jackson and PSS Morrisania Centers went door-to-door delivering herb plant containers and helpful indoor gardening tips to our members living in NYCHA apartments. The contactless delivery was part of our effort to maintain vital connections that can reduce loneliness. You can see from the picture (above left) that the delivery was indeed a mood booster.

The Container Garden Project is funded by New York State Office for the Aging and implemented by the NYC Department for the Aging in partnership with the NYC Housing Authority. A follow-up virtual class on how to grow herbs at home and use them in cooking conducted by a Registered Dietitian is planned. PSS is excited to help implement this novel program and to teach our members some home gardening skills and tips for healthy eating!
PSS Davidson Center Participates in Arts Project

Participating in the arts helps older adults combat loneliness and enhances mood. Art is calming and relaxing and can even be a (socially distanced) group activity as shown here.

Supported by Center members, Bronx artist Ruth Marshall created a colorful installation at PSS Davidson Center using plastic shopping bags and transforming them into a visual delight.
PSS Manhattanville Staff Distribute Food and Supplies

Center staff helped fill the gap that closing our Centers and kitchens has left by handing out food and supplies at the PSS Manhattanville Center. "The delivery was so organized, clean and even more impressive in person!" says Sr. Director of Older Adult Services Anya Metlitsky Herasme.

FREE Consulting to Help Plan for Your Financial Future
Image imported from Mailchimp
Yes, it's difficult to plan for the future when we don't know when the pandemic will end and we can get back to "normal" life. But that's no reason to avoid thinking about taxes, budgeting, credit, investments and all those financial concerns which will help determine what our personal futures look like.

Money Made Simple, a nonprofit in residence at PSS directed by Anthea Perkinson, has launched new, free, 30-minute one-on-one financial counseling sessions by telephone every Thursday between 4:30 and 6:30 PM. The initial response has been enthusiastic and participants have appreciated the opportunity to speak with financial professionals who volunteer to answer questions and provide financial guidance. These sessions will be offered on Thursdays until the end of the year, so if you have questions about credit, debt management, taxes, investment accounts or how best to save for retirement, sign up for a free, no obligation session. Meet Our Staff

ROSSY SOTO BSW
PSS Parkside Center Director
When I came to this country from the Dominican Republic (I am bilingual in Spanish/English) 14 years ago, I worked as a Home Health Aide (HHA). The services coordinator and nurses advised me to go to school and get a degree. I am the first generation in my family to obtain a Bachelors degree, in fact two, one in Hospitality and one in Social Work with a minor in Public Health from CUNY Lehman College. I am currently working on my Social Work Master's degree at Fordham University.

My first placement from Lehman was at a senior center where the more I learned about the older adult population, the more I wanted to continue providing them with help, assistance, and support, especially creating new programming and resources for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. My first full-time position with PSS was as the Program Coordinator at PSS Parkside Center where I am now the Director. PSS is supporting my professional growth with a work-study placement with PSS Circle of Care.

At PSS Parkside Center we are working on ideas and strategies to reach our members during the cold weather. We will soon be implementing a new system to mail or deliver a variety of materials to older adults, including tips to keep them healthy, ingredients for an easy and healthy meal or snack, and items for arts & crafts projects.
