Last week, our 4th graders participated in a creative writing residency led by the talented local author Diane Silcox-Jarrett. The North Carolina Lighthouse Residency was selected to expand the 4th graders’ writing skills and link to curriculum units on the NC coastal plains and the lighthouse art project that the students recently completed in art class with Mrs. Botfeld.
During the residency, students researched lighthouses to enhance the setting of their story, learned to develop characters with emotional depth, and practiced resolving conflicts in their story development. At the end of the week, students shared their original pieces and received live feedback from a real author.
This experience gave students increased confidence and pride in their writing abilities, and a greater appreciation for this form of creative expression.
This meaningful experience was made possible through the generous financial support of the Jeffreys Grove PTA and additional grant funding from The United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County.
Volunteers Needed for Our Next Cultural Arts Program
Our next cultural arts event will be a 5th-grade visual arts residency held January 7–13. We are seeking volunteers (with children from any grade level) to help the program run smoothly. No art experience is required! During this residency, our 5th graders will create beautiful banner art to be proudly installed and enjoyed in the school cafeteria. If you’d like to volunteer or learn more, please click the button below – we’d love to have your support!
