New and Notable
President's Corner
Dear Discovery School Families,

As this school year comes to an end, as your PTO President, I want to take a moment to ‘Thank You’ for all of your involvement and participation in making this year as successful as it has become. Although we were not able to finish the year as planned due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, I cannot help but reflect on my time as PTO President. You can bet this year will be a year to remember!

I am filled with gratitude for so many things: our amazing volunteers, our great sense of community, and the strong connections our children are making with each other and with our families. I am deeply grateful for the amazing teachers and staff who ensure that there is a safe and positive learning environment for our children every single day. Thank you for everything you did this school year to support Discovery through fundraising and volunteering.

This year I was very fortunate to not only serve as PTO President, but also work as an EA. Next school year you will find me again as an EA, as well as volunteering and serving in any capacity that I can serve.

Here is a quick recap of what we accomplished in the 2019-2020 year.

July 2019: Open House with food trucks.
August 2019: Boohoo Yahoo Breakfast for kindergarten parents. Smart Cards Went on sale.
September 2019: Spirit Night at BurgerIM.

November 2019: Holiday Luncheons.

January 2020: City School Foundation Gala- sponsoring a table for the teachers, We collected caps and lids to bring home two new recycled benches to campus. Hosted a Trivia Night for Discovery School families.
February 2020: Spirit Night at Climb Murfreesboro. Hosted Nashville Opera. Donuts with Dad.
March 2020: Teacher Workday brunch.
April 2020: Assistant Principal Appreciation and Dr. Maddux Birthday recognition.
May 2020: Teacher Appreciation Week. Please look for an email from your Room Parent for details!

These are some of our major funding efforts this year:
  • STEAM Park Fence and Engineering Fees
  • Registration fees for the Tennessee STEM Conference (for teachers)
  • Ayers Institute at Lipscomb University Personal Development for teachers
  • ALA Conference for Mrs. Shepard
  • Teacher hospitality events throughout the year
  • Copier Support
  • $4,000 to teacher room accounts and much more.

Although there were so many great things we were able to do, there were some things we could not carry out due to the time we were gone for COVID-19 quarantine.

We look forward next year to hosting Food Around the World Festival along with new efforts to bring our community together and fundraise for our school. We are still working hard to bring you the STEAM Park we promised, however when working with the city and other entities we have learned it takes longer than expected. We are close to starting our fundraising campaign and we hope any resources you have can move us in the direction of completion.

We are always looking for connections to resources, so please keep us in mind and reach out to Dr. Maddux or your PTO via email or Facebook messenger. We hope you all have a great summer break filled with memorable family moments, until we see you again, stay safe!

Have a Great Summer,

Genevieve Borendame

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week will be celebrated the first full week of May (May 4th - 8th). While our schools have been closed, our teachers have continued to work, adapting lessons plans, and learning new ways to engage and communicate with our children.

Shining a Light on a Special Area
Dear Parents,

It has been our honor to help your children explore their physical, artistic, musical, and literary talents this year! We love watching them making a basket in gym, being excited about finding their favorite book, being proud of their artwork, and singing their hearts out. Please know that we cherish these special moments and we love your sweet kiddos. Although we are sad with the way the year ended we look forward to lots of smiles and hugs in August! Thank you for sharing your most precious gifts with us!
