Art in the Classroom

We are still looking for volunteers for this fun program!

Please Note: the first session has now been extended to include December to allow additional flexibility in scheduling!

You do NOT need to know anything particular about art, as all the materials, lessons and project ideas are provided for you.

Our goal is to provide an art history program that offers Jefferson School students a snapshot of prominent works of art by a wide range of famous artists.

The kids really love this program, but we need to secure volunteers for each grade and classroom in order to make it a success!!

With gratitude, Your Jefferson School AIC co-chairpersons,
Kristin Lester ( and  Jenny Chismark (

It's that time again...cold and flu season!

Many school days are missed due to colds, flu and stomach viruses. Cold and flu germs are spread from person to person by way of coughing, sneezing, touching, or simply talking, and we have all heard before, good hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.

Some additional prevention tips include:
  • Wiping down the fridge, faucet handles and doorknobs.
  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils and cell phones.
  • Always cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, and if you don't have a tissue handy, use your upper arm, not your hands to cover your mouth.
  • Avoid touching your mouth or nose because your hands transfer bacteria and viruses between your hands and face.
Most importantly, if your child is feeling under the weather, PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME FROM SCHOOL! A fever (or lack of) should not always be the deciding factor.
More information on when to "Keep me Home Sick if..." see newsletter here and here in Spanish. CDC information on FLU here.
Jefferson Green Team Updates

Jefferson Green Team learns about packing ZERO (OR LESS) WASTE lunches!

"We don't need a handful of people doing 'zero waste' perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." ~ Anne Marie Bonneau

Green Summit kicked off its 'Sustainable Living' series at the Summit Free Public Library with the first topic on how to pack zero/less wasteful lunches...for both adults and kids! Lots of information shared about how Recycling is 'good', but not the big impact answer our Earth needs.

A few of the top ZERO WASTE lunch-packing tips:
  • SKIP the Ziplocs! Buy Eco-Friendly lunch boxes and reusable snack bags. Links to find some of the products here:
Recommended websites to buy products: (holiday sales should be coming up soon!)
  • Skip single use plastic forks/utensils. Opt for reusable, or forks from home!
  • Meal-planning is key and can help keep away the 'packing lunch blues'
If you'd like to learn more, please reach out to our Jefferson Green Team rep. Rachel Rydzewski ( Here is a copy of the full presentation for more details!
