Worship with Us this Sunday

July 17, 2022 | 10:00am In-person and Facebook Live...and later on Facebook

If you will be with us in person, please note that our Covid Team has made an adjustment in our Covid protocols. St Louis City and St Louis County continue to document a steady rise in COVID-19 cases in our community. We are also experiencing this with church members and friends. Therefore, PUCC is moving from '"asks recommended" to "masks strongly advised" until further notice.

Our scriptures are Genesis 18:1-10a (Abraham and Sarah visited by angels) and Luke 10:38-42 (Mary and Martha visited by Jesus) … both stories with elements of hospitality and surprise. How might we see ourselves in these stories?

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

School is out, many supplies are used up, and children will be taller by the end of summer. Let’s help school children be ready for next fall. Parkway UCC is asked to provide 300 2-pocket folders for the Isaiah 58 Back-to-School event on 30 July. Underwear and socks for any ages, small children through adult sizes would be most appreciated. We are also invited to host a game, activity booth, or resource table.

Isaiah 58 serves our neighbors in the Choteau, Jefferson, Cherokee, and S. Kingshighway boundaries. As you are able, please consider donating 2-pocket folders, socks, and underwear and place in the designated box in the church lobby by 29 July. Contact Evelyn Buretta: [email protected]

You may or may not know this song from ‘The Prince of Egypt’ – a very powerful song of trust and faith… remember the Israelites leaving slavery in Egypt

Winemaker Vince Amlin

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to God’s purpose. - Romans 8:28 (NRSV)

Last summer, I decided to make dandelion wine. It sounded romantic. Early summer in a bottle. Weeds turned into wine.

At a city park, I convinced my wife to join the illegal harvest. Back home, we painstakingly separated the yellow petals from the green bracts until our fingers were stained and our bowl was full. I made a simple syrup, juiced and zested three oranges and a lemon, activated some champagne yeast, and threw it all in a jar to ferment.

Nine weeks later, I opened it up to bottle it, and it smelled disgusting. Sickeningly sweet. Overwhelmingly floral. (Almost like hundreds of dandelions...) I took a taste and knew that no one would ever drink this wine. But I’d put in so much time, I went ahead anyway.

I set a reminder for six months, and when it came up, I put the smallest bottle in the fridge. That night, I poured us each a tiny taste. We raised our glasses and prepared for disappointment.

But we were surprised. It was good. Light and not too sweet. Pale yellow, like early summer in a bottle.

Something had happened in that bottle. Something had happened over those months. A miracle. Weeds turned into wine.

Paul treats it as obvious: we know that all things work together for good for those who love God.

To me it is anything but. The whole project seems a mess. A waste. A total loss.

But I cling to the promise, even now: God is working. A miracle is underway. In the fullness of time, it will be good.

Prayer: Jesus, winemaker, transform us.
