As Methodists, we are called to cultivate more disciples and deeper disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and world. You are invited to join us on the journey.

This week

Join Us for Worship

If we are being honest, we the people of God known as the Church have to admit that some of the stories found in our Holy Scriptures are particularly peculiar. These stories are still important narratives in the story of God. Join us this Sunday for the final sermon in the series, Strange Stories from Scripture.

Stephen Ministry

Do you have quiet gifts? Some people serve God through song, dance, leadership or have many other gifts that are very noticeable. Others have quiet gifts. They listen, they minister to others by their presence, they pray for others, and they care deeply.

If you have quiet gifts you would like to use in service to God, consider Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers are trained, lay persons that are matched to provide private, personal, one-on-one, Christian, caregiving to people who are having a difficult time.

If you want more information about Stephen Ministry, please contact the PUMC Stephen Leader Mary Neil Thompson at 910-280-2861. There is an upcoming Stephen Ministry training that begins on September 21 at Community Presbyterian Church. We would love to have PUMC members attend this training and join our PUMC Stephen Ministry Program.

If you are struggling in some area of your life and would like to be matched with a Stephen Minister, please contact Mary Neil Thompson, Pastor Jabe or Pastor Katie.

Join us for an evening Service for Peace on Thursday, September 24 beginning at 6pm with light refreshments. Women's Study

Ever feel like you're waiting forever for God to show up? You're not alone. Women are invited to join us for this six-week Bible study and meet Deborah, a woman who knew something about divine timing that we desperately need to learn today. Deborah wasn't just sitting around waiting for life to happen. She was a warrior, a wife, a prophet, and a judge who understood how to move in sync with God's perfect timing. Starting Monday, October 5 from 6-7pm.

Women's Retreat

Ladies are invited to join us for a weekend retreat October 9-11 in the mountains at Caraway! We will enjoy worship, rest, and fellowship, led by our guest speaker Rev. Marisa Gertz. Our theme is Draw Near: How Women in Scripture Can Help Us Draw Closer to the Divine. Spots are limited by Caraway’s availability, so register on Realm today!

THE GOTTMAN MARRIAGE RETREAT hosted by Jeremy & Elissa Mount on October 17 from 8am-1pm at PUMC.

Jeremy and Elissa are passionate about encouraging and equipping couples to lean into God and each other through the beautiful, challenging terrain of marriage. Married 31 years with four children, they returned to North Carolina after nearly 20 years serving together in the military, followed by years serving in the church — Jeremy now as an Army Chaplain, Elissa as a therapist. They’re excited to guide you through tools that deepen your connection as a couple, with God woven through it all as a common thread.

Cost is $20 and includes materials and lunch. Childcare is available.

Duke Day Football (vs UNC)

Duke Day is a day of faith, fellowship, food and football sponsored by the United Methodist Men. The day begins with a service and special guest speaker at Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School, followed by a tailgate meal and then attendance at the Duke-UNC football game---all for just $40 per person. Contact the church office to reserve tickets. Event begins on Saturday, October 17 at 10am.

Join Bill & Doris Russell as they lead this special GriefShare program on Saturday, October 24 from 9:30-11:30am. Program includes a participant’s guide, a 35 minute video, and a discussion after the video.

The participants will, no doubt, be flooded with memories of happier holiday celebrations that were held, prior to the loved one’s death. The participant’s guide articles and video include real life stories to help participants learn how to reduce stress, minimize loneliness, and navigate the holiday season.

There is no charge for this event, but preregistration is preferred so enough books will be available.

Staying Connected

Jim Gulledge Finalist in NC Reads

Methodists have often identified themselves as "People of the Book." Literacy has long been a key element in the faith and freedom of our people. One of the many ways that literacy is promoted in our state is through the North Carolina Reads program sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council.

Each year since 2022, the NC Humanities Council has sponsored a state-wide online forum to select the five books that will be read collectively from Murphy to Manteo in the following year to promote cultural cohesion, community and literacy throughout the Old North State..

This year our own Dr. Jim Gulledge's novel is one of the twenty in the North Carolina Reads semifinal selection process. He would like to invite the members of PUMC to join in this exercise in literacy and democracy by completing the following survey by September 10:

College Student Addresses

The Congregational Care Team wants to keep in touch with our college students. As the fall semester begins, we ask parents to send updated student addresses to the church office or text to Thomas McDow. Thanks for your help!
