Holiday Message from the Superintendent

Dear PUSD community,

As we approach the holidays, I wanted to express my immense gratitude for each member of our PUSD community - our parents, staff, teachers - who have collaborated so successfully this year to support our students in various capacities. This school year, we have all been called upon to take on new and evolving roles, and those efforts are noted and appreciated. This has been a year like no other I have experienced in my 33 years as an educator. It seemed that each time we thought we had things in order - the situation would shift and the challenges become more complex. Yet, in each case, we adapted, dug down deeper, and worked to figure it out - Together. I am very proud of us as a community.

Trustees Sworn in For New Terms
On December 15th, PUSD Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Board President Joan Laursen and Vice President Mark Miller.

In addition, newly elected trustees Kelly Mokashi and Mary Jo Carreon were sworn in, along with Steve Maher for his second term.

“It continues to be a privilege to serve the students and families of Pleasanton,” said Laursen. “I look forward to working alongside Vice President Miller and hand-in-hand with Trustees Carreon, Mokashi and Maher to best support our students during this critical time in our history."

Mental Health Tips For The Holidays
Although the holidays are filled with lots of fun and extra celebration, it is important to remember that holidays can often present unique challenges for students. Being off of their regular routine can provoke anxiety, and celebrating holidays when there has been a recent loss can be especially painful. Parents or caregivers can support their students by working to maintain some sense of routine over the break and processing with their students in advance about how the holidays may look different this year if there has been a recent loss. Brought to you by your PBIS School Social Workers.

Socktober... In December!

Fairlands Elementary 3rd grade teacher Angela Girod continued the school's annual Socktober, collecting enough donations to provide The Hanger with 1,500 pairs of socks!

Socks are highly needed in homeless shelters, but must be donated new, rather than used. Angela started the tradition in 2016, gaining inspiration from Kid President. Since its start, the Fairlands community has donated a generous 16,296 pairs of socks!
Student Entrepreneur Crafts Handmade Jewelry
This summer, Pleasanton Middle School student Emily Hughes started Poppy Petal Designs, a business that sells homemade clay earrings. Congrats on your success, Emily!
